Late Surge Lifts Cougar Women Past Lakeland

Box Score
Sept. 29, 2012 - Three goals in the final 21 minutes helped the Concordia women's soccer team overcome a 2-1 deficit and defeat Lakeland College 4-2 in Northern Athletics Conference play this afternoon. The win allowed the Cougars to even their overall record at 4-4 and improve the NAC record to 2-4.
The Cougars dominated the first half with 19 shots to the Muskies' three. However, they did not dent the net until the 41st minute. Freshman Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) one-touched a cross from Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) and fired from eight yards out to the upper part of the net.
The pace picked up in the second half with Lakeland tying the match just 2:41 after halftime. A deflection off a corner kick fell to Krystina Cook who one-touched the ball forward to Liz Pritzl in the center of the box. Pritzl's shot sailed high over Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) into the net.
Hannah Landgraf gave the visitors the lead in the 60th minute. Her lob from 35 yards out was perfectly placed between Hasselbring and the crossbar.
Concordia got the goal back nine minutes later. Campbell dribbled to the right and hit a hard shot that Muskies' keeper Ali Thompson could not handle. The ball trickled into the net before Thompson could recover, giving Campbell her second goal of the match and fourth in the last four matches.
Just three minutes later, the Cougars reclaimed the lead at 3-2. Campbell's corner kick was headed in at point-blank range by Ashley Kugath (Belvidere, IL/H.S.) for the freshman's first collegiate goal.
The Cougars added a key insurance goal in the 85th minute. Off a restart, Emily Ernst (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) hit a shot from 39 yards out that took a high bounce on the turf over Thompson and settled into the net.
Concordia finished with a 31-12 advantage in shots. Hasselbring earned the win with eight saves while Thompson was credited with 12 saves.
The Cougars will host local rival Dominican University on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00.
