Sept. 13, 2011 - The Concordia Cougars' bid for a third straight match win came up short tonight in the opening match of Northern Athletics Conference play. The visiting Dominican Stars were deadly accurate in their hitting, resulting in a three-set win by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-21.
A look at the hitting percentages told the story of the match. Dominican hit .312 on 34 kills in 93 attempts with just five errors. By contrast, Concordia hit .207 on 29 kills and 12 errors in 82 tries. The Stars were an especially potent .478 in the first set when they jumped out to a 10-2 lead. The Cougars would not recover from that opening blast and, although they played more competitively in sets two and three, the momentum established by the Stars in set one would carry them through the evening.
Claire Dezelski and Jacy Lawrence led the Stars with nine kills each, with Dezelski hitting a team-best .364. Concordia was led by
Sarah Potter (New Haven, IN/Woodlan) with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Savanna Ashbaugh (Waverly, IL/H.S.) handed out 16 assists and added seven digs.
The Cougars (3-6, 0-1 NAC) will look to get back on the winning track Thursday night when they play at Aurora University.
