Sept. 13, 2011 - The Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team are 3-1, equaling their best start to a season since 2003 after Tuesday night's 3-1 win at Knox College in Galesburg.

 

The host Prairie Fire gifted the Cougars with an eighth minute goal. Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) charged in from the wing and sent a pass back toward the center of the box. However, the ball deflected off a Knox defender and settled into the net for an own goal.

 

Knox struck in the 29th minute as leading scorer Arielle Dorman netted her sixth of the season unassisted. The 1-1 score stood up through the end of the half although Concordia dominated the shot column by a 8-3 margin.

 

The Cougars came out with a "much better" second half according to head coach Thomas Goines. They fired 12 shots to the hosts' two, and the pressure eventually caught up to Knox. Gorana Micevic (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood) caught the defense unaware as they tried to set up a wall on a free kick. Micevic nailed the 20-yard restart straight on and past the keeper for the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute.

 

Freshman Anne Rockert (Kankakee, IL/Herscher), playing in just her second match after being sidelined by injury the first few matches, gave Concordia the insurance tally in the 89th minute. Rockert ran onto a pinpoint pass from Soulis and beat the keeper from close range.

 

Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) earned the win in goal, making three saves.

 

The Cougars will look to even their Northern Athletics Conference record at 1-1 on Saturday when they host Concordia University Wisconsin.
