May 6, 2011 - Concordia's men's tennis team entered today's match versus the Milwaukee School of Engineering on a roll in Northern Athletics Conference play. The Cougars finished the regular season with a 7-2 (third place) record in NAC dual match play and an easy first-round victory over Aurora University this past Monday. However, a slow start in doubles play in today's NAC semifinal match put the Cougars in a hole from which they could not escape, and the result was a 5-1 loss that ended Concordia's hopes of a team championship.
The second doubles match produced the most excitement of the day. In the end, MSOE's Dustin Holzhauer and Jeff Scarpelli squeezed out a 9-8 win over Concordia's Jeff Smith (Moline, IL/home schooled) and Alex Tarullo (Berwyn, IL/Morton West). Thien Van (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) and Nathan Wingfield (Greendale, WI/Martin Luther) put up a tough fight at first before coming up on the short end of an 8-5 score to Juan Montenegro and Nicholas Matsuura. At third doubles, Mark Schadler and Eric Klamrowski won 8-3 over Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and Vince Termini (Addison, IL/Addison Trail).
When singles play began, Wingfield notched a win at second, 6-4 and 6-2 over Holzhauer. However, the Raiders nabbed the final two team points they needed with Schadler's 6-0, 6-1 win over Tarullo at third and Klamrowski's 6-1, 6-3 win over Van at fourth. The remaining singles matches were left unfinished.
Concordia finished the dual match season with an 8-6 overall record. They will compete in the NAC Individual Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
