April 23, 2011 - The Concordia Cougars solidified their chances for a berth in the Northern Athletics Conference team tournament with wins over Edgewood College and Marian University this afternoon. The Cougars are now 5-2 in conference play, 5-4 overall.
Concordia defeated Edgewood 8-1 in the early match on Saturday. The second doubles team of Jeff Smith (Moline, IL/home schooled) and Alex Tarullo (Berwyn, IL/Morton West), and the third team of Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and Jeff Termini (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) won their matches by identical 8-2 scores. Edgewood's lone point of the day came with an 8-6 win in first doubles.
The Cougars swept through all six singles matches. Nathan Wingfield (Greendale, WI/Martin Luther) was pressed to three sets in second singles by Max Divelbiss but came away with a 10-3 win in the third-set tiebreaker.
In the afternoon match, Concordia blanked Marian by a 9-0 score. The first doubles team of Thien Van (Berywn, IL/Morton West) and Wingfield engaged in a close battle with Jory Lawson and Andreas Anklam but came out on top by an 8-5 score.
Singles play saw all of the Cougars win their matches in two sets. Tarullo posted consecutive 6-0 wins in third singles while Van won his match 6-2 and 6-0 at fourth.
Concordia will travel to North Central College in Naperville for their final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday.
