April 9, 2011 - The Concordia Cougar men's tennis week completed their first week of dual match play with a 2-1 record. Saturday's action, the Cougars' first of three doubleheaders over the next two weeks, included a 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee School of Engineering and a 9-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College.
In the morning match at MSOE, Concordia's lone point in doubles came at third as John Gehm (Frankenmuth, MI/H.S.) and Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) defeated Nicholas Matsuura and Eric Klamrowski 8-5. The Cougars; two wins in singles came at first where Jeff Smith (Moline, IL/H.S.) beat Dustin Holzhauer 6-1, 6-3 and at sixth where Gehm topped Matsuura 6-4, 6-2.
Concordia had an easier time in the afternoon match at Wisconsin Lutheran. Smith won his singles match by 6-0, 6-1 scores. The Cougars won second through fifth singles - Nathan Wingfield (Greendale, WI/Martin Luther) at second, Alex Tarullo (Cicero, IL/Morton West) at third, Thien Van (Cicero, IL (Morton West) at fourth and Staffeld at fifth - by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The hosts forfeited the match at sixth singles.
In the two doubles matches played (the Warriors forfeited at third), the first team of Smith/Wingfield and the second team of Tarullo and Vince Termini (addison, IL/Addison Trail) both won by 8-1 scores.
The Cougars will host the College of DuPage on Wednesday and play at Elmhurst College on Thursday.
