Oct. 18, 2011 - The Concordia Cougar women's soccer team won its record-setting fourth consecutive match via shutout this evening, blanking the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors 4-0 in Milwaukee.
The win continued the Cougars' remarkable turnaround from last season when they posted a 1-14-1 record. Tonight's win was Concordia's tenth of the season, tying the 2003 and 2005 teams for most wins in a season. The 2011 Cougars will have an opportunity to set a new record for wins next Wednesday when they host Benedictine University in the season finale.
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) continued to provide the offensive punch, contributing to all four goals tonight. The sophomore started the scoring at the 9:20 when she notched her 21st on an assist from Kelly Engelking (Elgin, IL/Burlington Central). The tally was Soulis' sixth game-winning goal of the season.
Soulis extended the lead 10 minutes later with Stephanie Rivas (Elmhurst, NY/Arts & Business) earning the assist. The lead became 3-0 in the 30th minute when Gorana Micevic (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood) scored her third of the season. Soulis provided the assist this time, her eighth of the season which gave her the new single-season assist record that she previously shared with Kari Zielke (2005) and Lisa DeLong (2005).
Anne Rockert (Kankakee, IL/Herscher) scored the only goal of the second half. She converted Soulis' pass in the 61st minute for her fourth of the year.
Concordia held a 17-6 advantage in shots, 10-2 in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) made five saves in recording her fourth shutout. Cougar keepers Hasselbring, Sarah Ann Evers (Napoleon, OH/H.S.) and Samantha Bredeson (Rosharon, TX/Angelton) have combined to keep opponents scoreless over the last 366 minutes.
