Box Score Oct. 9, 2010 - The men's soccer teams of Concordia-Chicago and Marian University followed today's Homecoming football game with a spirited battle through 90 minutes. In the end, neither team could overcome the onset of darkness at 6:30, and the game was halted by the referee at the end of regulation play with the teams deadlocked at 2-2.
Marian enjoyed the better run of play in the first 45 minutes and scored the only goal of the half. David Reinke took a long pass in the middle of the field and beat Cougar keeper Bart Loos (Evans, NY/St. Francis) for a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
The Cougars came out after an abbreviated halftime break and stepped up the pace. It took just over five minutes for Concordia to notch the tying goal. Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) started the play with a pass to Mario Grana (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) on the right wing. Grana quickly sent the ball into the middle of the penalty area where freshman Kyle Joss (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) one-touched the ball from eight yards out into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Concordia remained on the attack, and their persistence paid off in the 75th minute as a Marian player committed a foul in the box. A penalty kick was awarded, and Jahns converted from the spot for his third goal of the season and a 2-1 lead.
The lead lasted just two minutes as a controversial call at the opposite end of the field resulted in a penalty kik being given to Marian. Brad Ogden took the shot and buried it into the net for the 2-2 tie.
The Sabres finished the game with 16-6 edge in shots. Loos was credited with seven saves while Marian keeper Nathan Thiery made two stops.
Concordia (2-8-4, 0-3-3 NAC) will play at Benedictine University in Lisle on Tuesday night.
