Alex Schmidt (Frankenmuth, Mich.) of the women’s track team is honored for the week of May 2-8.

Schmidt broke two school records among her three running events at the May 6-7 Northern Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships. Her 12:11.36 in the steeplechase (second place) beat her own record from earlier this season by a full 31 seconds. Schmidt’s 12:25.69 in the 5,000-meter run (fourth place) broke Julie Haertling’s 1983 record by just three-tenths of a second. Schmidt also captured third place in the 10,000-meter run with a 41:11.45. She accounted for 19 of the Cougar women’s 120.5 team points and helped them to a third-place finish in the meet.

Schmidt, the daughter of Tyson and Sharon Schmidt, is a 2009 graduate of Frankenmuth High School. She is a sophomore physical education major.
