A Tale of Two Halves: Early Advantage Fades as Cougars Fall to Fighting Saints

JOLIET, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team hit the road to take on University of St. Francis (USF). The Cougars roared to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but were overpowered in the second half and lost, 4-3.
 
Inside the Box
  • Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) scored for the Cougars, putting two in the back of the net off of three shots.
  • Cadence Hamby (Cumming, Ga.) scored her first collegiate goal.
  • Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) led the squad with four shots, two of which were on target.
  • Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.) made nine saves.
 
First Half
  • N. Flores made her way through the middle of the field to the top of the box, making the goalkeeper dive to make the save in the sixth minute.
  • Four minutes later, the Fighting Saints earned a corner. Through the traffic in the box, Wagner was able to keep an eye on the ball and make a diving save to keep the game level.
  • On the counterattack, the Cougars put the ball dangerously into the box. However, the ball bounced off the crossbar twice and the Fighting Saints were able to block two more shots before finally getting the ball out of the box.
  • Persistence paid off when CUC won a free kick in the 22nd minute. Lorenza Mendoza (Murrieta, Calif.) stepped up and lobbed the ball into the path, giving E. Flores the perfect opportunity to smash the ball into the back of the net for the lead.
  • In the 25th minute, off a corner kick from Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.), E. Flores headed the ball in for her second goal of the game to double the Cougars' lead.
  • Wagner made a save in the 31st minute and immediately played the ball up field where the Cougars earned a corner. Cazares took the corner kick again and this time found Hamby's head for another goal.
  • Wagner made two more saves before the halftime whistle, as the Cougars led 3-0 into the break.
 
Second Half
  • In the 51st minute, the Fighting Saints lobbed a corner kick into the box that Wagner was able to punch to the top of the box. One of St. Francis' players settled it and took a shot, but Wagner was able to keep it out of the net. N. Flores was able to find space up front on the counterattack but her shot went just wide.
  • The Fighting Saints strong start in the second half allowed them to find the back of the net in the 57th minute to chip at the lead.
  • Stacey Maskery (Alfreton, England) tried her luck on goal in the 70th minute but had her shot saved by the goalkeeper.
  • Two minutes later, the Fighting Saints scored from the penalty spot, cutting the lead down to one, 3-2.
  • Four minutes later, another corner kick by USF resulted in a goal, tying the game up at 3-3.
  • In the 77th minute, the Fighting Saints continued their offensive attack, forcing Wagner to make a critical save.
  • CUC finally made their way back to their attacking third and got a shot off that ended up hitting the post and going wide.
  • USF took the lead in the 87th minute. Off the following kickoff, Maskery played a dangerous ball into the box, almost making it over the goalkeeper, but was denied. The Cougars fell, 4-3.
