Creative Offense Drives Cougars to First Victory of the Season

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team defended their home turf this afternoon against the Beloit College Buccaneers. The Cougars put on a show for their home crowd, defeating the Buccaneers, 3-0. This marks the first victory under new Head Coach, Patrick Elster.
 
Inside the Box
  • The Cougars outshot the Buccaneers 22 to 3.
  • Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) led the squad with four shots, two on frame, and one goal.
  • Stacey Maskery (Alfreton, England) and Izzy Fairless (Royal Oak, Mich.) also put their name on the score sheet and each recorded an assist.
  • Naomi Gonzales (Santa Rosa, Calif.) recorded three saves.
 
First Half
  • Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.) set the tempo with a shot within the first few seconds of the game.
  • Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) and E. Flores continued the offensive attack a minute later, forcing Beloit's goalkeeper to make back-to-back saves and earn a corner kick. While the Buccaneers were able to keep the ball out of the back of the net, the Cougars' defense kept the ball forward for CUC.
  • Reagan Espinoza (Ventura, Calif.), Lorenza Mendoza (Murrieta, Calif.) Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.), and Cadence Hamby (Cumming, Ga.) all created their own chances at goal but were stopped by the Buccaneer's goalkeeper.
  • In the 40th minute, however, the Cougars' persistence prevailed as the Cougars took the lead. Great team play put the ball at Maskery's feet. She fed the ball down to the end line for Hamby, who crossed it in and found E. Flores, who headed it into the back of the net.
  • Four minutes later, CUC doubled its lead. Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) played the ball into the attacking half for Quetzalli Arteaga-Vazquez (Harrisonburg, Va.). Arteaga-Vazquez surged forward before dishing the ball to Fairless who rocketed the ball in for a goal.
 

 

 
Second Half
  • It didn't take long for the Cougars to resume their offensive prowess as Martinez ripped a shot towards goal in the 58th minute. Hirayama consistently found herself in mix, manufacturing multiple opportunities herself.
  • Gonzales faced a shot for the first time in the game in the 68th minute but was easily able to grab a hold of the ball.
  • Arteaga-Vazquez tried her luck in the 73rd minute. While her shot was saved, it did earn the Cougars a corner kick. Off the kick, Jasleen Grewal (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Fairless did a little give and go before Grewal sliced the ball through the box. Maskery got her foot on it and put the Cougars up 3-0.
  • Gonzales made two more saves but the pressure from CUC overwhelmed Beloit and the Cougars walked away with the 3-0 victory.
 

 
Words from Coach Elster
"Super proud of the ladies. Super strong performance today," Coach Elster beamed. "We've been content with style of play so far this season but from a results perspective we had to put things together. Today they were able to piece it together. We found more quality in the final third. We were able to put the ball in the back of the net a few times… An underrated part of the day is we held a shutout which we haven't done in bit too, which was big to do on our home turf as well."
 
What's Next
