Linko and Mahler Homer in Long Awaited Game Two Victory Over Marian

RIPON, WIS. -- The Concordia University Chicago baseball team left no doubt in closing out their series against Marian, using an early offensive surge and a dominant outing on the mound to secure the 8-4 victory and complete the long-awaited sweep over Marian University.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) went three-for-four at the plate with four RBIs after launching his 13th home run of the season.
  • Jack Linko (New Lenox, Ill.) followed behind going two-for-four at the plate with one RBI after picking up his third home run of the season.
  • Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) continued his hot streak going two-for-four at the plate with a double on the day.
  • Jack Carroll (North Aurora, Ill.) picked up his third win of the season going six innings with five strikeouts while Michael Southard (Northbrook, Ill.) picked up his first save of the season, coming in for three innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars got to work right away with Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.) launching a double to left center on the first pitch of the game. A single from Holloway would put runners on the corner bags while a walk for Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would load the bases up. A single from B. Mahler would score two and the Cougars would take an early lead.
  • A quick three up, three down inning at the hands of Carroll would give the Cougar offense their next opportunity. A single from Richie Sperando (Darien, Ill.) would put one runner on, but would be stranded in a scoreless inning.
  • The Cougar defense would work quickly again with a strikeout, flyout, and a popup creating another scoreless inning for the Sabres before handing things over to B. Mahler, who would pick up the first home run of the game on a solo shot to left center, moving him up to third in the Cougar record books for single-season home runs. Following the homer, Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) would take a competitive walk and steal second before a single from Linko would put runners on the corner bags. Linko would steal second, but a double play would close the inning with the Cougars ahead 3-0.
  • Two strikeouts and a groundout to Jeffery Beckert (Mount Prospect, Ill.) at short would force another scoreless inning for the Sabres and let the Cougars pick up where they left off. A single to right field from Buckley paired with J. Mahler getting hit by a pitch would put two runners on base. Two pitches later, B. Mahler would send a ball to center field and give Buckley time to score and put the Cougars up by four.
  • The game would remain at the 4-0 advantage until the top of the sixth where a leadoff walk for Buckley paired with an error would allow him to score and extend the Cougars out to a fresh 5-0 lead. Dom Owens (Frankfurt, Ill.) would single to left field, but he and B. Mahler would be stranded at the end of the inning.
  • The Sabres picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the Cougar lead down to 5-3, where it would sit until the top of the ninth.
  • In the top of the ninth, a solo home run from Linko would put the Cougars up by three. Beckert would get hit by a pitch while Sperando would single through the right side and put runners on the corner bags. Sperando would steal second and put two runners in scoring position, where they both would score on consecutive wild pitches, jumping out to an 8-3 lead.
  • The Sabres would punch together a rally in the bottom of the ninth where they would tack on one run off three hits, but a flyout to Holloway, a fielder's choice from Beckert to J. Mahler, and a game ending strikeout from Southard to secure the long-awaited series sweep over Marian.
