Holloway Drives in Two as CUC Baseball Drops Close Contest to Cardinals

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars baseball team took a break from conference play for a single-game matchup against the Cardinals of North Central College. The Cougars held the lead early, but a three-run inning for the Cardinals would be just enough for them to take the lead and maintain it for the remainder of the game, taking the win over the Cougars, 5-4.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.), Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.), and Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) each got two hits where Buckley and J. Mahler went two for three, and Holloway went two for five while tacking on two RBIs.
  • Dom Owens (Frankfort, Ill.) and Jack Linko (New Lenox, Ill.) both added a hit and both scored a run.
  • The pitchers had a bullpen day where after each pitching an inning, Blake Hickey (Chicago, Ill.), Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.), David Deimling (Bloomingdale, Ill.), and Kyle Connelly (New Lenox, Ill.) struck out one batter, and Kadin Borck (McHenry, Ill.) struck out three on five batters faced.

Here's What Happened

  • Buckley opened the bottom of the first with a single, where Holloway reached first on a fielder's choice where Buckley was out on the play. The only other hit of the inning was by J. Mahler, but with no further action, both runners were left stranded.
  • The second saw no runs on no hits for either team, where the teams quickly moved to the third.
  • After a bases-loaded situation, Ferraro held his ground on the mound, striking out the final Cardinal, leaving the score at zero for the Cougars to head up to bat.
  • Buckley was walked to open the bottom of the third, where a Holloway double to center field comfortably placed them both in scoring position. To follow, J. Mahler was walked to load the bases and the Cougars quickly found themselves in a bases-loaded situation, operating on one out. With Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) up to bat, a sacrifice fly would bring home Buckley and the Cougars were officially on the board first. Once Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) was walked, the Cardinals gathered for a mound visit to re-evaluate after being in back-to-back bases-loaded situations. The visit proved beneficial as the Cardinals grabbed the final out to head to the fourth with the Cougars leading 1-0.
  • The top of the fourth saw a lone hit by the Cougars but Borck came to play and closed out the top half of the inning with a strikeout.
  • Linko opened the bottom of the fourth with a hit to left-center and advanced to second on a balk. Jeffery Beckert (Mount Prospect, Ill.)'s sacrifice bunt advanced Linko to third. Buckley was then walked and a laser to left field by Holloway brought them both home. This would close out the scoring for the fourth and the Cougars increased their lead to 3-0.
  • Opening the fifth, the Cardinals tacked on two runs before Deimling threw a strikeout to close the top half of the inning.
  • Owens singled up the middle to get the action going in the bottom of the fifth but the Cardinals' defense came alive, closing out the inning with a double-play.
  • The Cardinals came to play in the sixth where they tallied three runs before the Cougars could close out the top half but not before the Cardinals took the lead, 5-3.
  • Operating on two outs,Buckley singled to center field but was left stranded.
  • Neither team saw any hits on any runs and the game was quickly in the eighth.
  • Owens was walked to open the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third after two passed balls. Beckert picked up an RBI after a chopper to short brought in Owens. The Cougars still trailed 5-4 heading to the ninth.
  • The Cougars quickly put themselves back up to bat after obtaining the necessary outs but the Cardinals gave it right back to the Cougars, taking the win, 5-4.
