Stars Outlast Cougars in Defensive Showdowns

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars softball team were back at home to welcome their Division Street rivals, the Stars of Dominican University. In game one, the Cougars played great defensively, but it wasn't enough as the Stars took game one, 6-5. In game two, both teams were hungry for the victory, but the Stars came out on top in game two, 4-2.

Game One

Inside the Box Score

  • Emily Lucero (Chino, Calif.) went two for two at the plate, collecting two runs.
  • Both Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) and Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) went two for three at the plate in game one.
  • Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) went two for four at the plate and grabbed one RBI.

Here's What Happened

  • As the opening inning began, things immediately got interesting as a Star singled up the middle. A Star then doubled to center field, advancing the previous runner to third. The next batter then reached first off of a fielder's choice to second base; Eliza Auger (Littleton, Ohio) prevented an early run by getting a Star out at home, leaving runners on the corners. A Star then proceeded to steal second off of a hit into foul territory.
  • A Star went on to hit into center field for a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars their second out, which allowed a Star to score a run, putting them on the board. Right after, a Star singled to third, helping the runner on second get to third, getting home off of an error by third, racking up one additional run. The top of the inning closed when a Star was caught stealing at second.
  • At the bottom of the first, the Stars worked fast in getting the Cougars out, wanting to get their bats moving sooner rather than later as they led 2-0 against the Cougars.
  • The second inning began with the Cougars working hard to get their outs in. The Cougars moved off the field and back up to bat after getting three up, three down. Hadzic was walked, followed by Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) reaching first off of a fielder's choice to shortstop - sacrificing Hadzic for an out. Larenas hit a single to left field, helping Campos advance to second. Auger then got out as the next batter, pushing Campos and Larenas into scoring position. Jazmine Gonzales (Riverside, Calif.) then got walked, which loaded the bases. Off of a wild pitch to Gulsby, all runners were able to advance, Campos sliding into home for the Cougars' first run, splitting the score in half at 2-1.
  • The third inning kicked off with a Star doubling to left center field; a Star then singled to third with a bunt, helping the previous Star advance to third, then scoring off of a throwing error from third, giving the Stars another run. A Star got walked; Another Star reached first off of a fielder's choice while another Star advanced to second - Campos getting the lead runner out. A Star then singled to center field, loading up the bases. Campos worked her magic again, getting a lead runner out once again to close up the Stars' chances for the inning.
  • At the bottom of the third, Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) was hit by a pitch; Lucero came in to pinch run for Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) as she got walked, which advanced Garcia to second. A hit from Hadzic was caught, leading to an out while Garcia got in scoring position. Campos then singled to shortstop, helping Lucero advance to second and Garcia was able to score, the Stars still leading 3-2.
  • The fourth inning went by quickly as both teams worked fast in getting their outs.
  • For the fifth inning, Alyssa Lopez (Corona, Calif.) showed off her pitching skills with deliberate throws to get in the first two outs. The Stars fired back by hitting multiple singles up the middle, advancing runners. A Star then singled to the pitcher, advancing to second off of an error from the pitcher; runners advanced and a run was scored. Two Stars were hit by pitches, giving them free bases, advancing runners and letting them score another run. The Cougars attempted to retaliate with a double from Lucero to center field; Hadzic then hit a single to right field, getting to second off of an error from right field. An out in progress helped Hadzic advance to third and Lucero was able to score a run for the Cougars. The Stars still led 6-3 at the end of the fifth inning.
  • Katie Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) started to fire back at the top of the sixth as she accomplished two strikeouts and another out to close the top of the inning. For the bottom of the inning, Auger got walked and was able to advance to second as Gonzales sacrificed herself on an out. Gulsby then doubled to left field, helping Auger collect a run. Even with another run, the Stars remained in the lead, 6-4.
  • The top of the seventh went by quick as outs filed in. For the bottom of the inning, Lucero singled up the middle; Hadzic then singled to left field and Lucero advanced to second. An out helped Hadzic and Lucero get into scoring position. Charlize Gonzalez (Dallas, Texas) came in to pinch run for Larenas after hitting a single up the middle, advancing the runners and getting Lucero to home plate once again. A double play from the Stars closed the final inning and allowed the Stars to take game one, 6-5.

The Cougars had great defensive plays in the field, but strategic steals and plays from the Stars would finalize the score as the Stars took game one, 6-5.

Game Two

Inside the Box Score

  • Campos showed her determination in game two as she went one for one at the plate, tallying a run and an RBI.
  • Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) went one for two in game two.
  • Gulsby continued to show her skills as she went two for four at the plate, collecting a run for the Cougars.

Here's What Happened

  • To start off the first inning, the Stars got their bats swinging as a Star singled to second, who then stole second later on. A star then singled up the middle where the previous Star advanced to third, but was out at home with a throw from McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) to Hadzic for the final out of the top of the inning. As for the bottom of the inning, Cougars were able to get into scoring position, but the opportunity closed in on itself as the inning closed.
  • For the second inning, the Cougars quickly got their outs in, similarly with the Stars in the other half of the inning, both teams collecting no runs.
  • Things started to kick off in the third inning as a Star singled to center field and stole second, while another Star got a walk. A Star then singled to second while runners advanced and the Stars grabbed their first run of the game. The Cougars followed up as Gulsby hit a double to left center field; Hadzic hit a single into right field, allowing Gulsby to bolt and get the Cougars' first run as well, tying the teams up to end the inning.
  • The top of the fourth proved to be uneventful as the Cougars got the Stars out quickly. Campos began the bottom of the inning with a home run, grabbing a run for her team. Southern then proceeded to single to right center field, but nothing came of that as the inning ended, the Cougars taking the lead 2-1.
  • The fifth inning started with a bang as a Star singled to shortstop, followed up by Auger's double play, getting the runners at first and second out. The Stars retaliated with a home run of their own and scored a run. The Cougars then took over the bats; Gonzalez pinch ran for Santos after she hit a single to left field. Morris then got a walk while Gonzalez advanced. Larenas proceeded to get an out, but not without Gonzalez and Morris advancing and getting into scoring position. Campos then walked, loading the bases. A strikeout from Lucero closed out the inning, the teams tying up once more at 2-2.
  • Morgan Houfek (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) worked consistently as she got the Stars out; the Stars worked consistently as well as they collected their outs for the sixth inning.
  • The final inning was entertaining as a Star was hit by a pitch, which was followed up by a Star singling to the pitcher, advancing the previous runner to second; another single loaded the bases. A Star then reached first off of a fielder's choice to shortstop while everyone else advanced and a run was scored. Another advancement led to another run, topping off the Stars' runs. The Cougars accomplished another double play with outs at first and at home to close the top of the inning.
  • For the bottom of the inning, Julia Pataluna (Commerce City, Colo.) came in to pinch run for Santos as she got walked.
