Heartbreaker in Game One Leads to Firebirds Sweep

Kenosha, Wis. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars softball team made their way to Kenosha, Wis. to battle against the Firebirds of Carthage College. In game one, both teams had incredible performances, the Cougars making an amazing comeback, but a late run would give the Firebirds game one, 8-7. In game two, the motivation dwindled as the Firebirds continued to collect runs, pushing the Cougars aside as the Firebirds took game two, 7-1.

Game One

Inside the Box Score:

  • Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) went two for two at the plate, collecting two RBIs.
  • Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) and Julia Pataluna (Commerce City, Colo.) both went one for one at the plate, Garcia grabbing one run and Pataluna tallying one RBI for the Cougars.
  • Charlize Gonzalez (Dallas, Texas) went one for one at the plate in game one.

Here's What Happened

  • To start off the first inning, the Cougars were quickly pushed off the field as the Firebirds collected their outs. The Firebirds got to work behind their bats as a Firebird singled up the middle and ended up stealing second from under the Cougars' noses. The Firebirds did not move forward with this effort as the Cougars worked to get them off the field to finish out the first inning.
  • The top of the second was lackluster as Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) was walked and proceeded to move to second before the top of the inning ended. Things started to pick up as a Firebird singled through to the right side; the Cougars wanted to prevent any additional moves as a double play had gotten two Firebirds out at once. Another Firebird then hit a double to center field; the next batter then singled to right field and the previous Firebird advanced to third. A Firebird singled to shortstop, letting the runners advance and score one run, putting them on the board. The Firebirds led 1-0 as the inning closed out.
  • Alaina Pilas (Chicago, Ill.) joined her teammates for her chance to bat and got walked to start the third inning, Garcia then singled to the pitcher while Pilas advanced to second. The Firebirds closed out the top of the inning; a Firebird proceeded to hit a double down the left field line - another Firebird then doubled to left center field and the previous Firebird scored yet another run for the Firebirds. The Firebirds continued to apply pressure to the Cougars as one singled through to the right side, helping another Firebird score. To finalize the third inning, the Firebirds grew their lead, 3-0.
  • The fourth inning grabbed the attention of Cougar fans as Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) doubled to right center field, with Campos singling to left field, helping advance Hadzic to third. Larenas then doubled down the right field line, advancing Campos to third and Hadzic to home plate, where she added a run on the board for the Cougars. The Firebirds pushed back as two proceeded to hit singles to center field, going on to steal second. A Firebird then tripled to center field, scoring on an error by third. With base advancement from that triple, two other Firebirds went on to score. Another Firebird singled to right center field, but outs would close out the fourth inning; the Firebirds continued to keep their lead, 6-2.
  • The fifth inning opened with Garcia being walked. McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) had a sacrifice bunt which advanced Garcia to second. Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) came in to pinch run for Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) as she hit a double to right center field, allowing Garcia to score. Southern was able to advance to third off of a wild pitch and Hadzic got walked, leaving runners on the corners. Hadzic proceeded to steal second; Larenas singled to center field while Hadzic advanced to third. Hadzic was out at home, but Southern was able to score for the Cougars as the top of the inning closed. The bottom of the inning went by quickly as the Cougars worked to get back to swinging their bats to finish the inning, catching up to their opponents as the Firebirds led 6-4.
  • For the sixth inning, Jazmine Gonzales (Riverside, Calif.) came in to pinch hit for Eliza Auger (Littleton, Colo.) and proceeded to hit a single up the middle; Haley Gulsby (Englewood, Fla.) then singled to left field, letting Gonzales advance to second. Gulsby and Gonzales were able to advance off of an out from Gonzalez; Morris hit a single through to the right side, letting both Gulsby and Gonzales score. The teams were tied by the end of the sixth, 6-6.
  • The seventh inning began with a double from Hadzic to left center field; a hit to right field from Campos resulted in an out, but Hadzic was able to get to third. Pataluna, who pinch hit for Larenas, singled down the right field line, helping Hadzic score before outs would close the top of the inning. The bottom of the inning was eventful as a Firebird got walked, only to be advanced to third after another Firebird singled to left field and was able to advance to second on a Cougar's throw, putting them in scoring position. A Firebird then hit to left field for an out, but not without another Firebird getting a run in. Outs would close the inning and the team remained tied, 7-7.
  • As the final inning opened up, Gulsby singled up the middle. Gonzales then singled with a bunt while Gulsby advanced to second. Gonzales and Gulsby were able to advance to scoring position as Morris gave the Firebirds their first out. Emily Lucero (Chino, Calif.) and Hadzic would give their opponents their final outs as the runners in scoring position went to waste. The second half of the inning went by fast as Firebirds landed themselves on first and second. A Firebird then reached first on a fielder's choice, where a Firebird was able to advance and another was able to grab the Firebirds' winning run, allowing them to take game on, 8-7.

The Cougars were strong with their consistent pitching, quick outs and willingness to keep fighting, but a run in the last moments would put the Firebirds in winning position, taking game one, 8-7.

Game Two

Inside the Box Score

  • Morris and Auger both went one for two at the plate for the Cougars and Auger collected an RBI.
  • Hadzic and Gonzales both went one for three at the plate.

Here's What Happened

  • The first inning went by quickly as both teams worked efficiently to grab their outs, moving into the next inning.
  • The second inning contained more substance as Lucero and Gulsby were walked back-to-back, putting them at first and second; Auger then singled through to the left side, helping Gulsby advance and Lucero scored the first run of game two. Garcia was also walked, advancing both Gulsby and Auger. Morris reached first on a fielder's choice, helping Garcia advance to second, but Auger collected an out at third. The Cougars worked hard to get their outs in after that, closing the inning in the lead, 1-0.
  • The third inning started out with quick outs from the Firebirds. As the Firebirds got their bats going, things started to heat up; a Firebird singled to center field and proceeded to second after a Firebird got out. That Firebird then advanced to third while a previous Firebird stole second and another scored on a throwing error. A Firebird got walked and accomplished stealing second. Another was walked before their teammate doubled to right center field and advanced to third off of an error from center field, allowing two Firebirds to score. The inning closed with the Firebirds on top, 3-1.
  • The fourth inning began with Lucero being walked, along with Gonzales singling to shortstop, letting Lucero advance to second. These opportunities went up in flames as the Firebirds collected their outs. A Firebird got walked. Another Firebird doubled down the left field line, advancing the previous Firebird to third. A Firebird then hit a triple to right center field, helping two Firebirds score. A Firebird then singled to shortstop, proceeded to steal second, allowing another Firebird to score another run. Any further runs were halted with a final out, ending the inning with the Firebirds leading 6-1.
  • The fifth inning opened with a double from Morris to right center field, but outs would close the top of the inning. A similar outcome would happen with the Firebirds - a single and a double leading nowhere as the score remained the same to seal the inning.
  • The sixth inning started with quick outs, putting the Cougars back on the field. The Firebirds came to bat; things started off slow when a Firebird reached first on an error from right field, enabling them to advance to third. A Firebird then hit a sacrifice fly out to center field, helping bring in their final run. A Firebird doubled down the left field line while another reached first off of a throwing error from second, advancing the previous Firebird to third. A Firebird then got walked, advancing the runners and loading the bases. A final out would close the game out the inning.
  • The Cougars went up to bat for their final attempt at grabbing runs, but the Firebird defense got all three outs without any damage done to the score, giving the Firebirds game two, 7-1.
