Johnson’s Career-High Day Not Enough to Overcome Falcons

RIVER FOREST, ILL.- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's volleyball team played on its home court against their rival school, the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). After both teams traded set wins, the Falcons secured the match with a 3-1 victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tate Johnson (Plainfield, Ill.) led tonight's match with a career-high ten kills, three blocks, seven digs, 31 total attacks, and 13.5 points.
  • Tristian Caminar (Bolingbrook, Ill.) ended the match for the Cougars with nine kills, five blocks, 27 attacks, and 12.5 points. 
  • Alexander Ford (Skokie, Ill.) battled through with eight kills, two aces, and three blocks.
  • Leon Gudzovski (Des Planies, Ill.) concluded with a team-high three aces and four blocks.
  • Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio) led in both categories of 29 assists and 14 digs for the night.
 
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The Falcons opened the set by scoring the first point with a kill, but the Cougars quickly matched their energy and tied the score at 1-1. After the Falcons took a two-point lead, the Cougars were awarded a point following an attack error, making it 3-2. The Falcons responded with four consecutive points to extend the lead to 7-2. Gudzovski recorded a kill for the Cougars, and the teams exchanged points back and forth. The Falcons then built momentum, scoring three straight points to push the score to 12-5. The Cougars continued to battle and found some rhythm, putting together a three-point run that began with a kill by Johnson, followed by two service aces by Gudzovski. Both teams continued to compete, with the Cougars behind by three until the Falcons pulled away, adding four more points to the set with a score of 22-15. The Cougars, attempting to close the gap, added another point with a solo block by Tristian Caminar, but the Falcons secured the final point off a kill, taking the set with a final score of 25-18.
 

 
SET TWO
The Cougars were first to pick up a point, but Falcons followed, tying the game early 1-1. Both teams played evenly until the Cougars pulled ahead by three, 10-7. After the Cougars were awarded a point based on an attack error, the Falcons answered with four straight points to take a one-point lead.  The Cougars fought back to tie up the game, but the Falcons regained a two-point advantage at 14-12 following additional attack errors. A block by Caminar and Gudzovski helped the Cougars tie up the game, 16-16. With tension building up for both teams, the Cougars and Falcons remained locked in a point for point battle. Coming down to the last point of the game, the score being 23-23, CUC gained the edge with another block assist by Gudvoski. After a Falcons timeout, CUC secured the final point on an attack error by CUW, winning the set, 25-23. The match was now tied, 1-1.
 

 
SET THREE
The Falcons earned the first two points, before the Cougars got on board with a point, 2-1. Both teams continued to trade points and remained close until the Falcons broke away with a five-point run, 12-8. The Cougars responded with a point off a service error, but the Falcons maintained their momentum and continued to add to their lead. After leading for most of the set, the Falcons saw the Cougars fight back and tie the game at 18-18 from a Falcon's attack error. Despite the push, the Falcon's pulled ahead again, building a four-point lead and taking the set after a block with a score of 25-21. CUW led 2-1.
 

 
SET FOUR
The Falcons were first to start the set with a kill, and the Cougars countered with a kill of their own by Johnson. The Falcons shot back with another kill, only for the Cougars to find themselves on a four-point run, taking the lead 5-2. The Falcons added a point while the Cougars followed with three more to maintain their lead. Kills from Mosher, Caminar, Johnson and Tyrise Armstrong (Grayslake, Ill.) continued to extend the Cougars' lead. Both teams continued to battle and eventually found themselves tied late in the set, 24-24. The Falcons regained momentum at the end and secured victory, winning 26-24. CUW took the match, 3-1.
