Villagran and Barnes Pick Up Points in Losses to Ripon and UW-Superior

RIPON, WIS.- The Concordia Chicago (CUC) Cougars men's tennis team battled in a double-header against Ripon College and University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Cougars match against Ripon College, showed fierce fight but ultimately fell 5-2. Against UW-Superior, CUC fell 7-0.
 
Match One: 5-2 L vs Ripon
DOUBLES
  • In the No. 1 doubles match, Andres Villagran (El Paso, Texas) and Sam Smith (Munster, Ind,) battled hard but came up short, 6-3.
  • At No. 2 doubles, August Barnes (Sodus, Mich.) and Collin Dickey (Frisco, Texas) were barely defeated, 7-5.
  • Kyle Pelzek (Hales Corners, Wis.) and Kevin Bullens (River Forest, Ill.) secured the lone doubles victory in the No. 3 doubles match, winning 6-4. However, Ripon took the doubles point.
 
SINGLES
  • Ripon overpowered CUC, winning four of six matches.
  • Villagran earned a straight set victory at No. 5 singles, winning a competitive first set 6-3, before dominating the second set 6-0.
  • Barnes also dominated both sets, winning the first 6-1 and the second 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
  • Both Smith and Bullens each fought hard through tight matches, trading momentum with their opponents, but both ultimately fell in third-set tiebreakers; 11-9 and 10-8.
 
Match Two: 7-0 L vs UW-Superior
Doubles
  • In the No. 1 doubles match, Villagran and Smith continued their effort, but fell 6-2.
  • Barnes and Dickey put up a fight but lost 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
  • In the third doubles match, Bullens and Pelzek battled through the set but were defeated, 7-5.
 
Singles
  • University of Wisconsin-Superior cruised by the Cougars, winning seven out of seven of their matches.
  • Smith, Villagran, and Barnes demonstrated work ethic, each falling in three sets with multiple tiebreakers at third, fifth, and sixth singles, respectively.
