RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team competed in its second game of the season, hosting the Cardinals of Andrews University. The Cougars showed out, defending their home turf 6-2. CUC starts the season off 1-0-1.
Inside the Box
- The Cougars outshot the Cardinals 28 to seven, with 15 shots on goal.
- Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) recorded his first career hattrick.
- Justin Ocampo (Melrose Park, Ill.), Evin Perez (Crystal Lake, Ill.), and Roman Klozik (New Lenox, Ill.) also put their names on the scoresheet.
- Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) and Chase Zizak (Muskegon, Mich.) split time in goal, combining for three saves.
First Half
- The Cardinals quickly forced Gudiel to make a save just 12 minutes into the game.
- However, it didn't take long for the Cougars to strike. In the 18th minute, CUC earned a corner which was taken quickly by Senese to Ocampo. Ocampo dished the ball back to Senese who slotted the ball to the near post for the 1-0 lead.
- Senese quickly tried his luck again off the restart but was denied by the Cardinals' goalkeeper.
- In the 22nd minute, one of the Cardinals' forwards picked off the ball and was able to tie the game.
- Senese, Perez, Klozik, Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.), and Ivan Pelayo (Midlothian, Ill.) each took chances but couldn't find the back of the net, leaving the teams tied, 1-1, at the break.
Second Half
- The Cougars were on the offensive prowl in the second half, recording 18 total shots.
- Senese reclaimed the lead in the 56th minute. Giovanni Lechuga (Monrovia, Calif.) danced his way down to the corner and crossed the ball into the box to the awaiting head of Senese.
- Just two minutes later, Ocampo doubled the lead. He headed in the ball past the goalkeeper off the corner kick from Bernardo Delgado (Morelia, Michoacán).
- Senese secured his hattrick in the 58th minute. He put pressure on the Andrews' defense and picked the middle defender's pocket, stormed towards the goal, and blasted the ball past the keeper for a 4-1 lead.
- After a bit of back-and-forth, Andrews was able to get a goal back, 4-2, in the 67th minute.
- In the 73rd minute, Perez extended the lead to 5-2. He won the ball and took the open space down the field. About 25 yards out, Perez let one rip to the top left corner, blasting past the Cardinals' goalkeeper.
- The Cougars' final goal came in the 82nd minute. Perez had his shot saved by the Andrews goalkeeper. However, the goalie couldn't grab the ball and deflected it into the path of Klozik, who easily put it into the back of the net.
