Cougars Defeated in Rain-Soaked Battle with Blackburn

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Despite the overcast and rainy afternoon, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team continued its string of home games, welcoming the Beavers of Blackburn College. Both teams left it all on the field, but it was Blackburn that would come away with the 3-1 win. The Cougars are now 1-1-1.

Inside the Box
  • Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) made a season-high nine saves on 25 shots faced.
  • Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) led the squad with four shots, three of which were on target.
  • Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) totaled three shots with two on frame.
  • Juan Moresco (Mercedes, Soriano) and Caleb Kale (Moline, Ill.) also had shots on net.

First Half
  • Senese continued to prove his offensive prowess by forcing the Beavers' goalkeeper to make a save in the first minute of the game.
  • For the next 10 minutes, both teams looked to find their stride and gain the upper hand. The Cougars' defense kept the Beavers from getting a clean shot while Moresco had his chance saved.
  • In the 17th minute, the Cougars took the lead after a Blackburn defender misplayed a ball back and put it in their own net.
  • Unfortunately, lead was short lived, as the Beavers bounced back. They scored twice over the next ten minutes to take the lead.
  • Gudiel remained strong for the Cougars, making two more saves in the half.

Second Half
  • Down 2-1, Senese once again led the offensive charge and created an opportunity for himself in the 50th minute but was denied by the Beavers' goalkeeper.
  • Two minutes later, Kale took his chance up top but had his ball collected by Blackburn's goalkeeper. Their keeper quickly sent the ball downfield and the Beavers were able to capitalize and make it a 3-1 game.
  • The Cougars never quit and continued to blaze up the field to challenge the Beavers. Bernardo Delgado (Morelia, Michoacán), Giovanni Lechuga (Monrovia, Calif.), Senese, and Velasquez each created chances, but the Cougars couldn't find the back of the net, falling 3-1.
