High Intensity Battle Against Vikings Ends in Stalemate for Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer team opened the season at home against the Vikings of Lawrence University. It was a physical match, with both squads battling it out until the end. As the 90 minutes concluded, the Cougars walked away with a 2-2 tie.

Inside the Box
  • Five Cougars got their first career start in the maroon and gold.
  • Giovanni Velasquez (Cicero, Ill.) led the squad with three shots and one goal.
  • Bernardo Delgado (Morelia, Michoacán) scored the opening goal for CUC.

How it Happened
  • CUC came out strong, as just 13 minutes in, Justin Ocampo (Melrose Park, Ill.) let off a rocket that ricocheted off the crossbar. Teammates Velasquez continued to put pressure on the Vikings, and Caleb Kale (Moline, Ill.) had back-to-back shots saved by the Vikings' goalkeeper.
  • The Cougars' backline of Velasquez, Juan Moresco (Mercedes, Soriano), Asael Castaneda (Bensenville, Ill.), and Andre Wangandu (Lansing, Mich.) did their job, limiting Lawrence to just three chances in the half.
  • The Cougars had a few more chances, but at halftime, the game remained scoreless.
  • Six minutes into the second half, Velasquez had his high shot saved by Lawrence's goalkeeper. This prompted the Vikings to charge down the field for a shot in the 53rd minute, but Nethan Gudiel (Chicago, Ill.) had it covered.
  • Just three minutes later, Gudiel punted the ball down the field. As it came down, Michael Senese (Naperville, Ill.) headed it forward into the path of Delgado, who blasted it past the goalkeeper to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as the Vikings tied the game back up a minute later.
  • The Cougars were on the defensive side of the ball for the next 15 minutes, as Lawrence were able to take the lead in the 74th minute.
  • Yet CUC never gave up and quickly tied the game. The Cougars earned a free kick in the 77th minute and looked to senior leader Velasquez to take the kick, where he sliced the ball to the bottom corner.
  • The rest of the game remained back-and-forth, but neither team could break the stalemate, and the Cougars ended the game in a 2-2 draw.
