Bullens, Loveshe, and Smith Snag Points in Tight Battle with Warriors

RIVER FOREST, Ill. –  The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's tennis team rounded out the weekend at home, hosting the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC). The Cougars battled back, but came up just short, 4-3.
 
Doubles:
  • All three doubles matches were within two games.
  • At first doubles, Collin Dickey (Frisco, Texas) and Reynaldo Leal (Weslaco, Texas) fought hard but fell 6-4.
  • Nathan Stringer (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Sam Smith (Munster, Ind.) battled to the end at No. 2 doubles, falling 7-5.
  • At No. 3 doubles, Kyle Pelzek (Hales Corner, Wis.) and Kevin Bullens (River Forest, Ill.) also came close, falling 7-5.
  • With all three doubles wins, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into singles.
 
Singles
  • The Warriors took the first two points in singles play, with Dickey falling in two 6-2 sets at first singles and Leal falling 6-1, 7-5, at third singles.
  • Smith picked up the Cougars' first point of the match at fourth singles. After falling 6-3 in set one, he bounced back to take sets two and three, 6-4, claiming the point.
  • WLC would clinch the deciding point at No. 2 singles. Stringer won the first set 7-5 and then fell in a close set two, 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker. Stringer unfortunately fell 6-1 in the final set of the match.
  • However, the Cougars continued to fight. Diego Loveshe (Franklin Park, Ill.) defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, for CUC's second point.
  • After falling 6-3 in set one at fifth singles, Bullens came back to win 6-4 in the next two sets to secure another point for the Cougars.
  • The Warriors just edged out the Cougars, 4-3.

What's Next
The Cougars round out the regular season on Wednesday, April 16. CUC will host Illinois Institute of Technology at 3:30 pm at the CUC Tennis Courts. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
