Zagerman's Double Secures Final Win in Florida For CUC

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – On the final day in The Sunshine State, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team took home one final win, downing the Saints of College of St. Scholastica 5-4.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Ryan Renella (Bartlett, Ill.) pitched seven innings for the Cougars throwing 88 pitches for a career-high seven strikeouts.
  • Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) had the hit of the game with a two-run double into left center to put the Cougars ahead 5-4 in the top of the ninth.
  • Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) head a team-high four walks in the game, but collected three stolen bases in the process, officially breaking him into the top ten in the CUC record books for career stolen bases. Hickman now sits tied for seventh with 54 career stolen bags.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars struck first in the top of the first off a leadoff walk and stolen bag from Hickman would put a runner in scoring position. A sac fly to right field from Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would put the first run on the board, and the only run until the bottom of the fifth.
  • Despite opportunities on both sides to put runs on the board, the score would sit stagnant until the bottom of the fifth where a two run homer for the Saints would give them their first lead of the day. Working through things, Renella would add on three more strikeouts to his statline before being replaced.
  • The Cougars got things going once again in the top of the eighth with a hit from Zagerman paired with a walk for Hickman would put runners in scoring position. Smart base running from Zagerman would score him off a groundout from Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) while a single to right field from Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) would put the Cougars back ahead by one.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, another two run homer from the Saints would retake the lead from the Cougars and put the pressure on the hitters in the top of the ninth.
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) stepped in to pinch hit and wore the first ball he saw to put a runner on base before being replaced by Benjamin Tietyen (Oak Creek, Wis.). Tietyen would make his way to second on a wild pitch before stealing third, but would get caught stealing on a sliding attempt home that would have tied the game up. Unhappy with this call, the Cougars rallied together to utilize the momentum for the better.
  • Now operating with two outs, Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) both walked and put Zagerman at the plate. With the momentum and rally on their side, Zagerman would send a long ball to left center and score two runs, retaking the lead once again.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back groundouts to Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) would put two away while Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) would send the dagger final pitch in for strike three and secure the win.
