Cougars Down Bluejays to Extend Win Streak to Four

CAROL STREAM, ILL. - In their first game in Illinois of the 2025 season, the Concordia Universiry Chicago Cougar baseball team took the field against Elmhurst Universiry, downing the Bluejays 11-6. This extends the CUC win streak to four straight games.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.) picked up his first win of the season pitching five innings with three strikeouts.
  • Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) picked up two RBIs on his lone hit of the day, a triple to the right field corner. Hickman picked up three stolen bases on the day, including stealing home.
  • Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) went two-for-three at the plate with team-high three RBIs off two sac flies.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite some early hits from the Cougars, the game would remain scoreless until the top of the fourth where a leadoff single from Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would get things moving. A single down the left field line from Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would move a runner into scoring position for Boswell's single to score the first run of the day.
  • With runners on the corner bags, an error from the Bluejays would put another run on the board and keep runners on the corners. A triple from Hickman to the right field corner would clear the bases and almost bring in the infield homerun, but a sacrifice fly from Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) would score the run instead and put the Cougars up 5-0 after the inning.
  • The Bluejays would put one on the board in their half of the inning, but the score would sit with a CUC 5-1 lead for another two innings until Hickman's walk would put him on base to steal second, third, and home all within two batters, to go up 6-1.
  • A big offensive inning for the Bluejays would bring them within one run, but another sac fly from Boswell would score a run to put the Cougars up by two heading to the bottom of the seventh.
  • Sitting steady until the top of the ninth, with the help of Cougar pitching from Blake Hickey (Chicago, Ill.) and Connor FitzGerald (Chicago, Ill.), the Cougar offense would take off and put four insurance runs on the board.
  • Holding the six run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, Allen Mateo (Austell, Ga.) would come in for relief and seal the deal with one strikeout to secure the CUC win.
The Cougars take a brief break in game play before their next game on Tuesday, March 18th, as they travel to take on North Central College with first pitch set at 3:00pm.
