NAPERVILLE, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) baseball team took on the North Central College (NCC) Cardinals in another non-conference matchup, ultimately falling 6-4.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led at the plate going three-for-four with one RBI and one double.
- The only other Cougar to record multiple hits on the day was Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) who went two-for-five at the plate with one stolen base.
- Seven arms worked on the bump for the Cougars with Kyle Connelly (New Lenox, Ill.) and Jackson Brigham (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) as the only two to record a strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals took the early lead after three up, three down in the top of the first from the Cougars gave them the chance to strike first. An error in the bottom half of the inning would put a runner on second where a single to left field would put them up 1-0 heading to the top of the second.
- The Cougars would struggle to get things going in the second inning once again, with a quick three outs in four batters. Holding the Cardinals in the bottom of the second with no hits and no runs, the Cougars would once again turn things back over to their bats.
- A leadoff single from Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) paired with a single from Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) would put two runners on while a single through the left side from Hickman would move runners, but with the Cougars eager to score, Boswell would be thrown out on the attempt and leave runners on the corner bags. A wild pitch would leave space for Hickman and Zagerman to take bases and officially put the Cougars on the board and tie the game up at one apiece.
- The score would sit stagnant until the bottom of the fourth where the Cardinals would put up three runs off two hits to retake the lead 4-1. It wouldn't be until the top of the sixth where the Cougars would start to find momentum after Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) would find his way on base to lead off the inning. A walk for Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) would put two runners on, but a double play would put two outs on the board and leave one runner on base where a double from Mahler would put the first CUC run on the board.
- With a pitching change, the Cougars would put one more runner on base with a walk for Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.), but a single to right field would only score one and leave the Cougars trailing by one.
- With Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.) taking the mound for the Cougars, three quick outs would send the Cougars back on the offensive side where a leadoff single from Hickman would get thigns going. After stealing second, Hickman would be in scoring position where a single to left field from Dorsch would put the game tying run on the board.
- The bottom of the seventh would see two hits and two runs for the Cardinals, giving them back the lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the game. With back-to-back three up, three down innings for the Cougars they would be unable to get anyone on base to combat the seventh inning surge and give the Cardinals the 6-4 win.
