Mahler and Dom Owens (Frankfort, Ill.) would put runners on first and second while tacking another run on with only one out. A walk for Boswell would load the based where a double down the left field line from Xavier Zagerman (Chandler, Ariz.) would score two more and leave two runners in scoring position.
- A walk for Holloway and Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) wearing a pitch would score one more and re-load the bases. After getting through the entire lineup in one inning, a force out at third would close the top of the third with the Cougars ahead 6-0.
- The Thunder would put one up in their half of the inning, but the Cougars would retaliate in the top of the fourth after three walks and a Wheaton error would score the Cougars.
- Wheaton would go on a run in the bottom of the fourth and bring the game within three runs, but the Cougars would stay strong at the plate and battle right back.
