Heartbreaking Walkoff Steals Win From CUC

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. - For the third game of the season, the Concordia University Chicago baseball team fell by a one run deficit. Despite some back-and-forth, Chatham would hold their fate in the bottom of the ninth, where a walkoff would secure their win over CUC.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) put up big numbers for the Cougars going three-for-four at the plate with two homeruns for two RBIs.
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) went two-for-three at the plate with a solo homerun as well as a double on the day.
  • Five arms worked for the Cougars as Jackson Brigham (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) picked up his first start where he would throw three innings with three total strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars started the game off slow with three quick outs, but would be able to get out of the bottom of the first with no damage done. Kicking off the top of the second, Mahler would send a long ball over the wall and put the Cougars on the board first. With runners on first a second, a sac bunt from Richie Sperando (Downers Grove, Ill.) would move the runners before a groundball in the infield would score Jake Mahle (Vernon Hills, Ill.) from third and give CUC the 2-0 lead.
  •  CUC would extend their lead out to three off a solo homerun from Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) to start the top of the third, but in the bottom half of the inning Chatham would put two runs up on two hits to make it a one run game.
  • CUC would tack two more runs up in the top of the fourth off a pair of walks and two hits to go up 6-2.
  • Chatham would answer right away with four runs off four hits to level the score at 6-6 for the first time since the start of the game. The score would sit at level until a single lead taking homerun from Kasik would put CUC up 7-6.
  • Chatham would answer right away with one run on one hit in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the bottom of the eighth to leave CUC trailing for the first time of the day 8-7.
  • Headed to the top of the ninth, the Cougars kept their fight alive with another solo homerun from Kasik to tie the game and put the pressure on the Cougar defense. Unable to fight the Chatham bats, a walkoff hit would end the game and leave the Cougars down 9-8.
