WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team took the field in Florida for game seven, where they would put the 4-2 win over Saint Mary's University. The Cougars battled back-and-forth with the Cardinals, but strong pitching and heavy bats would jolt them ahead for the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) was a perfect two-for-two at the plate today with two walks and one RBI.
- Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) were the only other two Cougars to record multiple hits on the day, both going two-for-four at the plate. Mahler picked up one RBI in a solo homerun that would level the game in the WHAT inning. Boswell would pick up one RBI off a single through the left side.
- Dylan Scott (Bartlett, Ill.) picked up his first win of the season throwing six innings while allowing one run and picking up four strikeouts in his 25 batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CUC struggled to get hot early after a strikeout, a flyout, and a runner caught stealing would end the inning scoreless. Cougar defense would answer back with three up, three down off back-to-back flyouts and a ground out to Boswell at second base. Things would stay knotted up at zero until the bottom of the second three hits for the Cardinals would score one run and leave the Cougars trailing.
- Operating down a run for the majority of the first half of the game, a solo homerun to left field for Mahler would even things up and bring new life to the Cougars. Things would once again sit stagnant until the top of the seventh were a sac fly from Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) would put the Cougars back ahead. A single to right center from Dorsch would send a runner home and put CUC up 3-1 headed into the seventh inning stretch.
- The Cardinals would fight back in the bottom of the eighth and put one run up, to leave the Cougars ahead by one in their final at bat. CUC was able to tack on one insurance run after a single from Mahler paired with a sac bunt from Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would put a runner in scoring position. With Benjamin Tietyen (Oak Creek, Wis.) pinch running for Mahler, a single through the left side from Boswell would score the run and give CUC a bit more of a comfortable lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.
- With Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) on the mound to close the game, a quick groundout to second would put the first out on the board. A fielder's choice that got the lead runner out would put two outs on the board before a strikeout to end the game would break CUC's three game drought.
