Dominant Performance in Game Two Earns Cougars Split Against Stars

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) baseball team took on Division Street rival, Dominican University, for a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) double header. The Cougars split the day, falling 4-3 in game one, that went to 10 innings. CUC regrouped and dominated game two, taking it 10-0 in seven innings. Concordia is now 10-9, 1-3 NACC.

Game One
Inside the Box
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the only Cougar to record multiple hits, going two-for-five with one run and an RBI.
  •  Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) went one-for-four at the plate, with his single batting in two runs.
  • Four Cougars pitched this afternoon, including Ryan Renella (Bartlett, Ill.), Bryce Jones (Ottawa, Ill.), Connor FitzGerald (Chicago, Ill.), and Kyle Connelly (New Lenox, Ill.), who all combined for nine strikeouts.

How It Happened
  • After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Cougars found themselves on the back foot in the bottom half of the inning, with bases loaded and one out for the Stars. Yet CUC got themselves out of the jam with a double play by Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) at third, to Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) at second, to Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) at first to not allow any damage.
  • The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, while the Cougars struggled at the plate, only getting three on in the first seven innings.
  • The Cougars would come alive in the eighth and rally, starting with Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) taking a walk to first, followed Richie Sperando (Darien, Ill.) recording a single. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Dorsch hit an RBI single to the outfield, bringing home Holloway and tying the game, 1-1.
  • With Sperando on third, Dorsch was able to steal second and get two Cougars in scoring position. Then, J. Mahler sent one flying into left field, bringing in both runners to go up 3-1.
  • The lead was short lived however, as Dominican was able to tie the game back up in the bottom of the inning.
  • In the ninth, a strikeout from FitzGerald and two putouts by Holloway and Dorsch kept the Cougars alive and forced extra innings.
  • Unfortunately, a walk off hit by pitch for the Stars gave them the game, 4-3.

Game Two
Inside the Box
  • Dylan Ferraro (Windsor, Colo.) secured his third win of the season, recording a career-high eight strikeouts on 26 batters faced and a total of 78 pitches.
  • Dorsch remained on point for game two, leading the team as he went three-for-three at the plate with one run and three RBIs.
  • Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.) had a day, scoring three runs and registering an RBI, going two-for-two at the plate.
  • Boswell and Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) also picked up multiple hits on the day.

How It Happened
  • The Cougars got on the board early with a sacrifice fly from Dorsch to bring home Hickman in the first.
  • In the second, Buckley took his opportunity from third on a wild pitch to double CUC's lead.
  • Concordia continued to build its lead in the fourth. Buckley and Boswell got themselves on base and were able to score to make it 3-0.
  • Then, a single from Sperando and a double from Hickman got the Cougars in prime scoring position with Dorsch stepping up to bat. Dorsch smashed one into the outfield for a two RBI single, and giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
  • During the top of the fifth, Krater led off with a single and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Buckley. Boswell's single and stolen base put runners on second and third for the Cougars. The Stars' pitcher once again threw a wild pitch and Krater capitalized.
  • Dom Owens (Frankfort, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Boswell and go up 7-0.
  • CUC rounded out their scoring in the top of the sixth. With two runners on, Buckley sailed one to right field for an RBI single. He then stole second while Boswell got walked to load the bases. Owens sent one into the outfield for a two RBI single and take the lead 10-0.
  • Strong pitching from Ferraro kept the Stars dormant, and the Cougars walked away with a 10-0 victory.
