Hot Bats and Big Plays Lead Cougars to Victory Over North Park

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) baseball team welcomed the Vikings of North Park University (NPU) to town this afternoon for a non-conference matchup. The Cougars got their bats hot early and took the game 16-10. CUC is now 9-8, 0-2 NACC.

Inside the Box
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) had himself a game, leading the team at the plate, going four-for-four with four runs and four RBIs, including a three-run homer.
  • Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) went three-for-five with two runs and an RBI.
  • Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.), Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.), and Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) each picked up two hits on the day.
  • Six Cougars worked the mound today, including Jackson Brigham (Rolling Meadows, Ill.), Blake Hickey (Chicago, Ill.), Bryce Jones (Ottawa, Ill.), Allen Mateo (Austell, Ga.), Kadin Borck (McHenry, Ill.), and Jack Linko (New Lenox, Ill.). Hickey secured the win, pitching two innings with two strikeouts and Linko registered the save, pitching the final three innings with three strikeouts.

How It Happened
  • In the first, Dorsch took a walk and then stole second to put himself in scoring position early. J. Mahler then put one out into left field for an RBI single to bring Dorsch home and put the Cougars up 1-0.
  • In the top of the second, the Vikings took the lead, 2-1. However, CUC bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a triple from Krater.
  • Cam Buckley (New Lenox, Ill.) brought Buckley home with an infield single and was able to advance to second. Boswell then bunted, putting runners on first and third.
  • Hickman followed suite with an RBI single bunt to bring home Buckley and reclaim the lead 3-2.
  • Dorsch stepped into the batter's box next and hammered one out to left center field, over the fence, and recording the first home run of the day, increasing the lead to 6-2.
  • Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) got on base and advanced to third on a single from J. Mahler. During the next at bat, J. Mahler was caught stealing second, but Kasik was able to come home.
  • Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) then got on base, followed by a two-run homer from Krater, putting the Cougars up 9-2 at the end of the second inning.
  • NPU chipped away at CUC's lead, scoring twice in the top of the third inning, but the Cougars stayed calm, with Boswell opening the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to left field.
  • A double from Hickman and walks for Dorsch and Kasik would load the bases for CUC. J. Mahler came up to bat next and was hit by a pitch, which saw Hickman score to make it 11-4. B. Mahler then stepped up with a three-RBI double to right center field, and put the Cougars ahead 10, 14-4.
  • CUC continued to add to its lead in the fourth, as Dorsch's RBI double brought in Hickman.
  • The momentum shifted slightly in the fifth as the Vikings were able to put up six runs, decreasing CUC's lead to 15-10.
  • The next two innings were scoreless for either team until the bottom of the seventh. Dorsch led off with a double and an RBI single from Kasik brought home Dorsch and put the Cougars ahead 16-10.
  • Linko pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing zero hits and recording three strikeouts to help CUC to victory.
