RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) softball team played in their home opener this afternoon, hosting the Thunder of Wheaton College for a double header. The Cougars were on point today, sweeping the Thunder 4-2 and 4-3. CUC is now 6-4.
Game One
Inside the Box Score
- Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) had a well-rounded game, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
- Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) went 2-for-3 from the plate and recorded her first save on the mound this season.
- Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) picked up the win on the mound.
How It Happened
- In the first inning, Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) singled into center field, allowing Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) to come home for the first run of the day.
- The Cougars picked up two more runs in the second. Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) hit a hard liner right towards the Thunder's pitcher which brought Hadzic home and advanced McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) to third.
- Immediately following, Shroll knocked one down the middle to bring home Morris and go up 3-0.
- In the fifth inning, Hadzic brought home Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) with a single to center field.
- In the sixth, the Thunder were able to score two runs, but Shroll stepped onto the mound at the top of the seventh for the Cougars. A quick three up, three down secured the win.
Game Two

- Geng went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
- Hadzic blasted the Cougars' first home run of the season.
- Megan Bouska (Plainfield, Ill.) recorded her first win on the mound this season, while Morgan Houfek (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) registered the save.
How It Happened
- Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) took advantage of a loose ball at the plate, stealing home to put the Cougars up once again in the first inning.
- After a single and a walk, Geng hit a double to the outfield scoring Santos and Jolene Anderson (Romeoville, Ill.) to go up 3-0.
- After a quick second inning, Hadzic remained hot and hit one out of the park, increasing the Cougars' lead to four.
- In the fourth, Wheaton scored twice and again in the sixth, closing in on CUC, 4-3.
- However, Houfek was brought in at the top of the seventh and made quick work of the three batters she faced and saved the game.
