Cougars Fight Hard in Double-Header Battle Against Firebirds but Fall

River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars kicked off their full week of home games with a double-header against the Carthage College Firebirds. The Cougars put up a great fight towards the final innings of game one but fell 7-4. In game two, the Cougars put up a strong second inning with six runs but ultimately fell 18-8.

Game One

Inside the Box Score

  • McKyler Morris (Belvidere, Ill.) went two for three and ran across home plate once to add to the Cougar points.
  • Both Emily Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) and Arissa Santos (Moreno Valley, Calif.) went two for four in game one, where Santos also added an RBI.

Here's What Happened

  • The Firebirds started off the scoring at the top of the second inning and continued to score unanswered runs until they were up 5-0 at the top of the fifth.
  • The Cougars remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth where Jessica Geng (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a single to third base and brought home Ashley Shroll (Tampa, Fla.) for their first run of the game.
  • Kicking off the bottom of the sixth, Santos got her first homerun of the season, bringing in the second run of the game, and making the score 7-2, favoring the Firebirds.
  • Following Santos, Melisa Hadzic (Westchester, Ill.) singled to left field and then a beautifully placed bunt by Morris allowed Hadzic to advance to third and placed her in scoring position.
  • Hadzic stole home for the third run of the game for the Cougars, after the Firebirds failed attempt of tagging out Morris at second. The score was now 7-3.
  • The final run scored of the game was from a single through the left side by Garcia bringing home Morris which made the score 7-4.

The Cougars were unable to score the necessary runs to catch up in the remaining inning and fell in game one 7-4.

Game Two

Inside the Box Score

  • Mayah Larenas (Chino, Calif.) had three hits on four at-bats as well as added two RBIs in game two.
  • Hadzic went two for four, but added three RBIs for the Cougars.
  • Morris had a great day at the plate going two for four in game two and ran in for one run.

Here's What Happened

  • The Firebirds came out hot in game two where they ran in three runs in the opening inning. They followed their scoring at the top of the second with two more runs where they made the score an early 5-0 game.
  • At the bottom of the second, Emily Lucero reached first on an error from the Firebirds and then was followed by a single from Alyssa Campos (Eastvale, Calif.) to left field which advanced Lucero to third and placed her in a comfortable scoring position.
  • A Shroll double to left field brought home Lucero and allowed Campos to advance to third.
  • With the bases loaded, Geng was walked which brought home Campos, bringing in the second run for the Cougars. Chipping away at the lead, the Cougars trailed 5-2.
  • Continuing in their strong hitting performance, a double up the middle by Larenas brought home Katelyn Smith (Chatsworth, Ga.) and Shroll.
  • The final run batted in was thanks to Hadzic after with a single to right field bringing home Larenas and Geng. These two runs would bring the score to 6-5 and pulled the Cougars into the lead.
  • Unfortunately for the Cougars, in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, the Firebirds ran in a total of eight more runs, unanswered by the Cougars, and retook the lead, 13-6.
  • At the bottom of the sixth, starting with Geng, a single up the middle followed by a Morris single to the pitcher would place Geng at second and Morris at first. Another single for the Cougars, this time by Larenas would load the bases.
  • A single to right field for Hadzic would bring home both Morris and Larenas bringing in the seventh and eighth runs for the Cougars making the score 13-8. An unfortunate double play by the Firebirds would end the inning and scoring opportunity for the Cougars.
  • At the top of the seventh, the Firebirds put up five more runs making the score 18-8 heading into the final half-inning of the game.

The Cougars were unable to obtain any runs in the final inning and fell in game two 18-8
