Pair of Homeruns from Cougars Unable to Combat Gators

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – On day two of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, the Cougars fell late in the game to Allegheny College. Despite the first two homeruns of the season for two Cougars, they would fall to the Gators 13-8.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) went four-for-five at the plate with three RBIs and two runs, highlighted by a two run homerun in the fifth inning.
  • Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) went three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs off two doubles.
  • Five Cougars dished on the mound in Dylan Scott (Bartlett, Ill.), Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.), Allen Mateo (Austell, Ga.), Connor FitzGerald (Chicago, Ill.), and Eliot Higgins (Park Ridge, Ill.) for a combined nine strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Gators jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a leadoff homerun before three consecutive outs would get the Cougars out relatively unscathed. In the Cougars' half of the inning, two early walks would put runners on base and in scoring position. A series of unfortunate events for the Gators would easily send Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) and Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz) home to take the 2-1 lead.
  • Keeping momentum on their side, a scoreless inning would put the hot Cougar bats back at work. Brendan Holloway (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would get things going right away with a leadoff single up the middle before a single from Zagerman would put runners on the corners. Unable to convert, the Cougars would head to the top of the third still on top by one run.
  • The Gators would jump out in the top of the third with four runs on four hit, but back-to-back flys to left and right field would get the Cougars out of the inning.
  • The Cougars answered quickly with a leadoff solo homerun from Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) before back-to-back singles from Krater and Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would put two in scoring position. A double right up the left line from J. Mahler would score two and even the game up once again.
  • Three up, three down in the field for the Cougars with pitching from Scott would give the Cougars a chance to go ahead. With Hickman once again seeing an easy trip on base before a single to left from Dorsch would send him to third. A single up the middle from Krater would give the Cougars the lead until the top of the sixth.
  • The Gators would put up big numbers in the top of the sixth with eight runs on three hits, leaving the Cougars a hearty deficit to overcome. Wasting no time in chipping away at that deficit, a double from Kasik and a homerun from Krater would bring the Cougars within five runs.
  • Battling back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, the Cougars would be unable to put anything else up on the board and fall 13-8.
