AUBURNDALE, FLA. – On day one in Florida, the Cougars of Concordia University Chicago would face off against the Wolverines of Grove City College, pulling the 6-5 victory after a back-and-forth day.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) went three-for-five at the plate with two RBIs and one run.
- Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) went two-for-three at the plate with two runs.
- Jack Carroll (North Aurora, Ill.) picked up his first win on the season with two innings pitched, collecting one strikeout while allowing no runs in nine batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars batted first and after four quick batters would head to the defensive side of the field. A leadoff walk for the Wolverines paired with a hit would let a runner get within 90 feet from scoring. Another hit on the inning gave the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.
- Heading into top of the second, a leadoff walk for Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) followed by a single from Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would put runners in scoring position. A sac fly from Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) would send B. Mahler home and level the game heading into the bottom of the second.
- A four batter inning at the hands of Michael Southard (Northbrook, Ill.) would send things back to Cougars where a leadoff double from Dorsch paired with a single from Kasik would put the Cougars up 2-1.
- A quick bottom of the third and top of the fourth, with eight combined batters, would put the Southard back on the mound. Three hits from the Wolverines paired with one error from the Cougars would put two runs on the board for Grove City and steal the lead back from CUC.
- Trailing for the first time since the first inning, a leadoff double from Elijah Hickman (Rensselaer, Ind.) would put him in position to score, where he would on a single through the left side from Kasik. A double from Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) would put two runners on base where a hard hit ball from B. Mahler would score another and put the Cougars back ahead 4-3.
- Four hits from the Wolverines would put one more run up in the bottom of the fifth and even things up and four, holding steady until the top of the seventh were the Cougars would put one more run up on the board off hits from Krater and J. Mahler.
- Despite some close calls from the Wolverines, the Cougars would stay ahead by one heading into the top of the ninth before hits from Dorsch and Kasik would put runners in scoring position to score one more off a sac fly from B. Mahler.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Wolverines kicked things into high gear, after two consecutive walks put a runner in scoring position. A fielder's choice and a balk would score one more, but with Kyle Ston (Winfield, Ill.) would secure the win from the mound, closing the game 6-5 in favor of the Cougars.
