PLYMOUTH, WIS.- In another weekend of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) football, the Concordia Chicago University (CUC) football team traveled on the road against Lakeland University. Lakeland dominated Concordia that resulted in a Cougar loss with an end score 47-9.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Colton Bosch (Coopersville, Mich.) passed for a total of 113 yards with12 completions. Bosch was sacked five times with 3 interceptions but had his longest pass drive for 19 yards.
- Josiah Lugo (San Antonio, Texas) led on the ground for a total of 109 yards and one touchdown.
- Kevon Lawson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) led with seven receptions and 45 receiving yards, with one touchdown.
- Devean Shearer (Saint Charles, Ill.) led defensively with ten tackles with eight of them being solo.
- Both Demaris Dumas (Chicago, Ill.) and Kadin Stroer (Warrenton, Mo.) each grabbed an interception for CUC.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
CUC won the coin toss and deferred to give Lakeland the first opportunity to score. Lakeland seized the opportunity, completing a 66-yard pass for a touchdown, to put the first points on the scoreboard at 7-0. After the Lakeland touchdown, CUC managed to piece together their first drive and converted for a first down. Struggling to continue their momentum, Lakeland intercepted a pass by the CUC offensive with a pick six expanding their lead to 13-0. CUC responded with a determined 13 play, 47-yard drive that resulted in a turnover of downs. With Lakeland having possession again, benefiting from gaining yards and defensive penalties against CUC, they were able to rush for another touchdown, leading 20-0. As the first quarter ended, CUC found themselves in their own territory with possession on their own 2 yard line. Resulting in Lakeland shutting out CUC 20-0, to begin the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
With CUC starting with the ball in the second quarter, Lakeland's defense continued their momentum and forced a turnover on downs. Lakeland was able to take that opportunity and put another touchdown on the board, widening the gap 27-0. The continued CUC struggle resulted in another forced punt, only this time to be blocked, leaving Lakeland to rush for 54 yards for another touchdown, expanding the lead 34-0. After exchanging drives, CUC finally found some offensive rhythm. They completed a couple of passes for a crucial first down, highlighting a 10-yard completion to Lawson. Continuing to target Lawson, Bosch connected with him for a touchdown pass, putting CUC on the scoreboard, still trailing 34-7. The half ends with a CUC drive of five plays for ten yards with a touchdown, preventing Lakeland from continuing their shut down.
THIRD QUARTER
After deferring into the second half, CUC started with the ball. With a sack on the play for Lakeland, CUC was forced to punt the ball. Continuing to ramp up the score, Lakeland scored a touchdown, jumping to a 41-7 lead. Trying to make something happen for the CUC offense, a pass was shortly picked off for another Lakeland pick-6 touchdown, increasing the score 47-7. The third quarter ended with Lakeland regaining possession after CUC turnover of downs.
FOURTH QUARTER
CUC defense forced a turnover of downs, giving the offense another opportunity. The CUC offense was unable to convert and both teams continued battling throughout the next couple possessions including two CUC interceptions. Continuing strong CUC defensive pressure, Lakeland rushed in the middle for a loss of a yard resulting in a safety. CUC was able to score two points off the safety, increasing their score. With two minutes remaining in the game, CUC back on their offenseive end
Jakob Redmond (Bishop, Calif.) found Lugo for the next six downs for a total of 49 yards and touchdown to end the game. Despite hard efforts, CUC fell short to Lakeland, ending the game with a score of 47-16.
