Chicago, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's volleyball team hit the road to take on the Scarlet Hawks of the Illinois Institute of Technology. After four sets of intense gameplay, the Scarlet Hawks take the win 3-1.
Inside the Box Score
- Kate Foley (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the game with eight kills and 15 digs, followed closely by Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.), who had seven kills and Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.), who had six kills.
- Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.) was not afraid to get low as she had 24 digs for the night.
- Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had five kills, 17 total attacks and one dig.
Here's What Happened
Set One
The Scarlet Hawks were the first on the scoreboard with a kill. After a short advance, the Cougars got a point, putting them on the scoreboard.
Beatriz Goncalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) managed to earn the first kill of the night for the Cougars, but the Scarlet Hawks remained in the lead with 8-4. The Cougars continued to trudge behind the Scarlet Hawks before finally earning the ball back after a well-aimed kill from
Neva Foster (Parker, Colo.), putting the score to 10-19. Even after some back and forth, an overshot kill sealed the deal; the Scarlet Hawks walked away from this set with a score of 25-13, putting them 1-0 against the Cougars.
Set Two
The Cougars were the first on the scoreboard; they stayed in the lead against the Scarlet Hawks with 7-0 before losing the ball.
Hunt performed an easy kill in order to get the Cougars back on track and continued to show her skills on the court during the set. The Cougars kept their lead with 14-7 before losing the ball, then gaining it back with a beautiful set from
Isabel Valle (Chino, Calif.). Cooper made a close kill by the net, pushing the Cougars further into the lead. Roethel did a great job retrieving the ball; her efforts to keep the ball alive pushed the Cougars further towards a set win, but the Scarlet Hawks approached quickly. The Cougars earned their first set win of the night with a score of 25-18, tying the teams up at 1-1.
Set Three
The Cougars were first on the scoreboard in set three. The Scarlet Hawks quickly took the lead, but the Cougars wouldn't give up as the first kills of the set came from Hunt and Foley. The Scarlet Hawks continued to keep their lead at 11-4. Foley put the Cougars into double digits, but they still fell behind to eight unanswered points. Quevedo was able to perform a kill by the net, which put the ball back into the Cougars' possession with a falling score of 13-23. After a kill from a Scarlet Hawk against Roethel, the Scarlet Hawks put another set win under their belts with a score of 25-17, pushing the team into set four with a lead of 2-1.
Set Four
The Cougars were first on the scoreboard with a block from both
Indiah Day (Merrillville, Ind.) and Cooper. The Scarlet Hawks maintained a small advance on the Cougars with 5-3; the Cougars followed behind after a block by Valle and Quevedo. Hunt managed a kill against the Scarlet Hawks, but they still kept their lead.
Foley placed a kill toward the back of the court, gaining some points back. Quevedo set herself up to attack at the net and completed a kill, putting the score to 16-21. Roethel made it obvious that the ball would stay alive, as she had been doing for the majority of the night. Miraculously, the teams tied at 23-23. Cooper and Hunt maintained the tie at 24-24. The Scarlet Hawks ended set four with 26-24, leaving the night's game winners with 3-1.
