HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
SET ONE
Day of CUC delivered a kill, putting their team on the board first. Alverno was quick to recover and got a point, tying them on the scoreboard with CUC. CUC quickly responded, increasing their lead by scoring four consecutive points, 5-1. Despite Alverno's attempts of effort, CUC continued putting points on the board while they continuously trailed behind by multiple points. With numerous kills by different CUC players, CUC would be too far ahead and in rhythm, that Alverno would not come back from. Therefore, with Day finishing up the set with a strong kill, CUC was able to crank the scoreboard to twenty-five points. The Cougars took set one, 25-23.
SET TWO
With a service ace, Alverno was the first on the board, where they were soon countered by kills by both Cooper and Hunt. Alverno answered aggressively and momentum continued swinging, as they attacked CUC with six points on the scoreboard, leading 7-2. Followed by Alverno taking the lead, CUC made their presence known scoring four back to back points. After that sequence, both teams would go on exchanging points, consisting of a kill for both Cooper and Day, and two attack errors from Alverno. Trying to work off CUC's momentum, Alverno was able to continue scoring but the score remained hopeless as CUC continued battling for the victory. CUC was able to adjust when the scores got close to the last couple points especially with the three kill finishes by Cooper, Kate Foley (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) putting points on the board and taking set two 27-25, and now led 2-0.
SET THREE
Switching gears, with both teams getting on the board, Alverno, hungry for points, strikes first with an uproar of four points. With Alverno leading, CUC followed with a kill from Foley. With the countless attempts, Alverno would find they would be able to continue scoring points and took the set, 25-19. With CUC at a large deficit to come back from, Alverno took set three and both teams continued to set four. CUC still led 2-1.
SET FOUR
With the constant pattern of both teams battling each other, CUC finally took initiative and created a seven point lead in set four. Through a four point lead, major plays with Alverno attack errors, service ace and a kill by Hunt, shut down Alverno's chance of taking over the game. CUC continued increasing the score and showing fight in all attempted efforts to rack up the scoreboard. Day was able to call the game with the winning set point. CUC put Alverno to rest in set four, taking the set 25-20. With the conclusion of this game, CUC had their first conference win over Alverno, 3-1.
