Cougars Rally Strong but Eagles Soar to Victory

Lisle, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's volleyball team was at Benedictine University for conference play against the Eagles. After four sets of intense rallying, the Eagles took the win for the night with a final score of 3-1.

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Beatriz Goncalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was the game leader with 16 kills, 12 digs, three assists and one ace, followed by Indiah Day (Merrillville, Ind.), who had 11 kills, 18 digs, and one ace.
  • Neva Foster (Parker, Colo.) showed out with eight kills as well.
  • Bethany Roethel (Westby, Wis.) managed to get 16 digs for the night.
  • Isabel Valle (Chino, Calif.) had 32 assists.
 

Here's What Happened

Set One

The Eagles were the first on the scoreboard, with the Cougars following closely behind after a service error from the Eagles. Kate Foley (Milwaukee, Wis.) had her first kill of the night, putting the Cougars to 2-2. After some rallying, Goncalves put the Cougars into the lead with 10-8 and she continued to push them forward with back to back kills. The Eagles took the lead after multiple attack errors from the Cougars; Day put the Cougars on the Eagles' backs after multiple kills, putting the score to 19-22. The Eagles took the first set with a score of 25-22, going into set two 1-0.

 
 

Set Two

The Eagles, again, were first on the scoreboard. Malainna Adler (Fenton, Mo.) assisted Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in tying up both teams at 3-3. Consecutive kills from Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.), Day and Goncalves pushed the Cougars ahead. The Cougars persisted, and Day put the Cougars behind the Eagles with a score of 9-11 with a beautiful kill. The Eagles continued to take the lead with nine unanswered points. Foster ended the Eagles' rally by delivering a major kill, putting the score to 13-21. An Eagle performed one last ace, taking the second set from the Cougars 25-13 and moved into set three, 2-0.

 
 

Set Three

The Cougars were the first on the scoreboard and began leading this set with renewed vigor; after blocks by Foster and Quevedo, the Cougars remained in the lead, 6-3. Foster continued to push the Cougars forward after a kill against the Eagles. The Cougars were first to double digits, but the Eagles took the following point. The team tied up with 17-17, but the Eagles quickly took the lead after a timeout. A kill by Cooper put the Cougars in the lead with 20-18. The Cougars fought to take the lead and managed to take set three with a score of 25-23, putting the total score to 1-2.

 
 

Set Four

The Eagles were first on the scoreboard; Goncalves put the Cougars in the lead with 3-2 after a kill. Goncalves and Cooper went up for a block against the Eagles, putting the score to 4-5. A kill by Quevedo put the Cougars up, but the Eagles eventually tied up with 10-10. The team rallied back and forth and Day ended the rally with an easy kill, putting the Cougars ahead with 17-15. At the timeout, the Eagles were in the lead at 23-22. The Eagles ultimately take the fourth and final set with a score of 25-23, beating out the Cougars 3-1.

 


 

What's Next
