HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
The opening minutes of the game saw both sides settle in defensively before the Cougars could begin to build rhythm in their attacking third. Despite the Falcons finding the back of the net in the 14
th minute, the Cougars never wavered and a low shot looking for back post from Martinez would miss just wide after a strong feed from deep up the field. Moments later, the Cougars would see another string of opportunities after Barreno got up in the air and met a corner kick ball with a strong header that forced the Falcons to make their first save of the day. CUC kept the pressure on after the corner kick where Martinez would chase down her own initial delivery and fire again, aiming for the back post, sending it high and wide.
Despite the Cougars continuing to attack, the Falcons would counter every move and find their second goal of the day. Despite the Falcons going up 2-0, Sheriff would stay hot in the net and pick up six saves to keep the Cougars afloat heading into half.
SECOND HALF
The Cougars opened the second half with several changes, including Gonzales taking over in goal and immediately making her presence known with a pair of early saves. Gonzales turned away a low shot in the 49
th minute and again denied another shot minutes later to keep CUC within reach. The Cougars generated some offensive momentum with Flores testing the CUW goalkeeper twice in quick succession around the 52
nd and 55
th minutes, both driven efforts to the right side that were handled.
Reagan Espinoza Suarez (Ventura, Calif.) added another dangerous look from distance in the 57
th minute, sending her shot just high over the bar as the Cougars pressed forward. The Falcons would secure their final goal of the day off a penalty kick, and securing their 3-0 win over the Cougars.
The Cougars will be back in action on a week from today as they host Benedictine University for a 2:00 pm kickoff. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
