Four-Goal Frenzy Lifts Cougars Over Benedictine

River Forest, Ill. - After a week long break, the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team was back to welcome to their home field the Eagles of Benedictine University. With an electric first half, followed by an equally thrilling second half, the Cougars obtained their third win of the season with 4-2.
 
Inside the Box:
  • Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.) was the top player with one goal, one assist, and five total shots, with Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) following closely behind with one goal and four total shots.
  • Grace Chavez (Morgan Hill, Calif.) contributed to the Cougars' success with one goal and two total shots, along with her teammate Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.), who had one goal and three total shots.
 
Here's What Happened
First Half
  • The Cougars brought the pressure as they went head-to-head with the Eagles on defense; the Cougars efforts toward their offensive plays grew immensely throughout the first half.
  • In the 7th minute, Benedictine were first on the scoreboard, putting the Cougars behind 0-1.
  • In the 9th minute, Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) assisted Chavez from the right side to tie up the score 1-1 with a goal to the bottom left of the goal.
  • In the 19th minute, Hirayama put the Cougars in the lead with 2-1 with an impressive corner cross shot into the bottom left of the goal, followed by another goal in the 35th minute by Flores as she battled her way toward the goal and shot the ball into the bottom right side of the goal, making the score 3-1.
  • In the 38th minute, the Eagles scored on a penalty kick, pushing them closer to the Cougars with a score of 2-3.
 
 

Second Half
  • In the 52nd minute, Martinez made a well-aimed goal on a free kick into the top right side of the goal, pushing the Cougars back into a two point lead with 4-2.
  • Hirayama and Barreno demonstrated their skills on the offensive side as they weren't afraid to get involved in the chaos of the Eagles.
  • The Cougars took their third NACC win (third win overall) of the season with an ending score of 4-2.
 
What's Next
The Cougars will play at home on Saturday as they host Wisconsin Lutheran College for Senior Day. Kickoff is slated for noon with Senior Day activities slated for 11:45am. Coverage for anything CUC women's soccer can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
