RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team hosted the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) for a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. The Cougars battled until the end, but a late goal by the Warriors ended the game in a 2-2 draw.
Before the game, the Cougars honored their two seniors and graduate student,
Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.),
Ariana Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill.), and
Morgan Burnap (Strafford, N.H.).
Inside the Box
- Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) led the Cougars offensively with five total shots, two of which were on goal, and one that went into the net.
- Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) and Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.) followed closely behind with four shots and three shots, respectively. Each had one shot on target.
- Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) scored a penalty kick for the Cougars.
- Sheriff recorded three saves.
First Half
- The Cougars came out strong, pushing down the field and getting two quick shots off from E. Flores and Barreno and two corner kicks.
- In the 12th minute, N. Flores brought the ball up the field and laid the ball across the six-yard box for E. Flores to tap in for a 1-0 lead.
- CUC didn't let up and Barreno had a strong high shot saved by the Warriors' goalkeeper in the 18th minute.
- In the 21st minute, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick after Barreno was fouled in the box. N. Flores stepped up to take it and buried it into the net for a 2-0 lead.
- The Cougars' defense kept the Warriors from having any strong chances while Luciana Morán Cruz (Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico), Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii), and Barreno kept creating and taking chances for CUC.
- However, in the 39th minute, WLC was able to find the back of the net to cut the deficit in half and go into the break with a 2-1 scoreline.
Second Half
- Sheriff made her first save of the game in the 49th minute, stopping a low hard shot from the Warriors.
- CUC continued to battle forward and in the 59th minute, Martinez tried to put one over WLC's goalkeeper, but had her shot saved. E. Flores tried to go low in the 62nd minute, but her attempt was saved as well.
- Hirayama, Barreno, and E. Flores continued to take shots for the Cougars but couldn't find the back of the net.
- In the 84th minute, WLC managed to find the back of the net to tie the game.
- The Cougars pushed forward and battled for corner kicks and a few shots but didn't find the back of the net by the time the horn sounded. The Cougars walked away with a 2-2 draw.
