Cougars' Momentum Swings Not Enough to Derail St. Norbert

De Pere, Wis. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's volleyball team was on the road this weekend for another Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match up against the Green Knights of St. Norbert College. After three close sets, the Cougars fell 3-0.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Neva Foster (Parker, Colo.) led the offense for the Cougars where she had seven kills on the day and following closely behind her were Lili Hunt (Greenfield, Ind.), Indiah Day (Merrillville, Ind.), and Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each had four. Hunt also added two blocks and Day added nine digs to lead on the defensive end.
  • Malainna Adler (Fenton, Mo.) contributed both on the offensive and defensive end where she had seven assists and digs as well as two service aces.
  • Isabel Valle (Chino, Calif.) led in assists where she added 14 on the day.

Here's What Happened

Set One

The Green Knights were on the board first and took an early 3-0 lead, but the Cougars quickly answered with two kills by Quevedo and Hunt. The Green Knights went on to a 7-3 run where the score was 11-5 favoring the Green Knights. The two teams would go on by exchanging three and two point runs where they would trade off on who would obtain kills. Despite the Cougar effort, the Green Knights never looked back and continued to charge forward until they were the first to reach 25. The Green Knights took that one, 25-16.

Set Two

In a change of pace, the Cougars were the first on the board, where the duo of Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) and Hunt had a huge block to set the tone. The Green Knights were able to answer back with two consecutive points, but the Cougars remained unfazed and proceeded to go on a 6-1 run thanks to kills by Foster, service ace by Cooper as well as a block by Hunt and Quevedo. This adrenaline rush favored the Cougars and increased their lead to 7-3. The Green Knights made a quick adjustment and answered this run with a 10-2 run taking over the lead in the set where the score was now 13-9. Both teams proved their want to take the second set in the efforts of Day with a kill, followed by a service ace was answered by the Green Knights, with kills of their own. The Green Knights found themselves ahead by as much as five points where the score was 20-15 but the Cougars pulled off a 4-0 run, led by kills from Foster and two back-to-back service aces by Adler, bringing the Cougars within one where the score was 20-19. Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to maintain this momentum shift and the Green Knights took set two 25-23 and now led 2-0.

Set Three

The Cougars had a dominating 3-0 run to open set three where Foster took control, adding a kill and a solo block. It did not take long for the green nights to slowly start fighting back where the two teams would exchange point for point until the green Knights went on a 3-0 run to tie the score up at nine apiece. The two teams would continue going point for point and exchanging leads where the cougars even found themselves the first to reach 20. Despite kills by Hunt and Foster to increase the Cougar lead to 22-20, the Green Knights took the next five points consecutively and took set three 25-22, and swept in three sets, 3-0.
