RIVER FOREST, ILL. -- On Homecoming Sunday, the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team kicked off the game festivities with a thrilling 1-1 draw with the Green Knights of St. Norbert College. This important draw helped keep the Cougars in a tight battle in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) rankings
INSIDE THE BOX
- Angelina Barreno (Chicago, Ill.) was the lone goal scorer for the day off her team-high five total shots and three shots on goal.
- Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) followed closely behind with two shots on goal with three total shots.
- Morgan Burnap (Strafford, N.H.) had herself a day as well with one assist, two shots on goal, and three total shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- The Cougars come out assertive in the opening half, applying early offensive pressure against the Green Knights. They generated several strong scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes, highlighted by shots from Barreno and Burnap, before Flores tested the Green Knight's keeper with three well-placed attempts. Despite CUC's early rhythm and consistent attacking movement, the SNC keeper held firm to lock the Cougars out.
- Defensively, Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) anchored the Cougar backline with key saves in the fifth and 44th minute to deny SNC's scoring bids. CUC stayed active in possession and rotated fresh legs throughout the half, with contributions from Grace Chavez (Morgan Hill, Calif.), Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.), and Michelle Marecki (Lombard, Ill.) to maintain the team's tempo.
- Momentum shifted in the 31st minute when St. Norbert capitazlied on a counterattack to take a 1-0 lead from a long ball into the upper net. The Cougars continued to push forward, earning one more quality look from Chavez late in the half, but couldn't find the equalizer before halftime.
SECOND HALF
- The Cougars came out of halftime with purpose and energy, immediately turning up the offensive pressure. Their persistence paid off early when Barreno struck in the 49th minute to level the match 1-1, finishing a well-placed assist from Burnap off a corner kick sequence. The goal marked a well-deserved reward for CUC's attacking momentum, after coming out firing with multiple shots in the opening minutes.
- Following the equalizer, the Cougars continued to dominate possession and create scoring chances. Barreno stayed active up front, with three more shots on goal in a seven minute span. Additional attacking efforts from Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.), Julia Urbanczyk (New Lenox, Ill.), and Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) while Emma Schlismann (Joliet, Ill.) and Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) also contributed some key looks.
- Despite a flurry of late chances, the Cougars couldn't find the go-ahead goal. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but CUC 's second half-performance showed a strong burst at the necessary moments.
