Here's What Happened

Set One

The Cougars were first on the scoreboard with an ace from Eva Fitzgerald (Houston, Texas). The Cougars kept up an amazing lead against the Spartans, a kill by Goncalvez putting the Cougars up 10-6. The team came in strong this set with back-to-back kills, most notably from Goncalvez and Livesay. By the set's second timeout, the Cougars remained in the lead with 16-14. The teams tied up at 20-20; the Cougars got back in the lead after blocks by Hunt and Ava Quevedo (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The success was short-lived as the Spartans took the first set with a score of 26-24, going into set two with 1-0.

Set Two

The Cougars were, again, first on the scoreboard after a kill from Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.). The Spartans began in the lead with 7-2. The Spartans continued to fly ahead with seven unanswered points after multiple attack errors from the Cougars. The Spartans had over 10 points on the Cougars, but the Cougars carried on fighting with kills from Foley and another ace by Fitzgerald. A block that landed out of bounds led the Spartans to take set two with a score of 25-17, pushing them into set three with 2-0.

Set Three

The Cougars were first on the scoreboard after an attack error from a Spartan. The team continued to exchange points, battling for the set. The Spartans maintained a significant lead on the Cougars, pushing ahead by seven points. Fitzgerald brought the Cougars within one point of the Spartans (16-17) with four consecutive aces. The Spartans gained their lead back and were within game point when a kill from Hunt kept the Cougars in the game for that much longer. A kill from a Spartan sealed the deal with the Spartans taking the third and final set with a score of 25-20, sweeping the Cougars 3-0.
