Cougars Unable to Claw Back from Early Deficit Against Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team traveled to Fond du Lac, Wis. for a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup against the Marian University Sabres. The Cougars put up a fight, but two first half goals for the Sabres proved the difference and CUC fell 2-0.
 
Inside the Box
Naomi Gonales (Santa Rosa, Calif.) stood strong in net, making five saves.
Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii), Alexa Martinez (Downey, Calif.), and Erika Flores (Oxnard, Calif.) each recorded a shot on frame.
 
First Half
  • The Sabres quickly put pressure on the Cougars with two shots within the first five minutes of the game. In the 11th minute, Gonzales got low and made her first save of the afternoon.
  • Marian went up 1-0 in the 16th minute.
  • Almost immediately, Martinez looked to equalize, taking a hard low shot, but the Sabres' goalkeeper was able to make the save.
  • Hirayama tried her luck by shooting toward the bottom right corner in the 23rd minute, but once again, the Cougars were denied by Marian's goalkeeper.
  • The Sabres were able to double their lead in the 37th minute and held a 2-0 lead to the break.
 
Second Half
  • The Cougars were the first to strike out of the break. Flores created a chance in the 48th minute, but had her shot saved, keeping the Cougars scoreless.
  • The Sabres immediately came back at the Cougars and had two quick shots, one of which hit the woodwork.
  • In the 55th minute, Gonzales stretched up to make a save. Just three minutes later, Gonzales recorded back-to-back saves to keep the deficit to two goals.
  • CUC held Marian off, denying the Sabres any clean opportunities. The Cougars also worked forward and Martinez took her second shot of the day in the 80th minute.
  • Gonzales made one more save in the 81st minute, but the Cougars couldn't rally and fell 2-0.
 
What's Next
