HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:Ā
Ā
FIRST QUARTER
CUC won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. CUW started strong with an explosive kick return, but the CUC defense was able to withhold them from getting a first down, highlighted by a sack that forced a punt. However, CUC fumbled on the punt return, handing possession back to CUW in CUC territory. CUW capitalized, scoring the game's first touchdown and taking a 7-0 lead. With a 28-yard kickoff return from Blake Henson (Potosi, Mo.) would start their next drive at their own 46. Trying to gain momentum, CUC was unable to convert on the fourth down, having CUW start their third drive of the game. Six snaps converted to a touchdown and increased the CUW lead after another touchdown, 14-0. On the next two offensive drives, CUC faced offensive struggles with both possessions being overturned to CUW for fumbles, one conceding a touchdown for CUW, 21-0. The first quarter concluded with CUC driving up the field, trying to gain momentum and looking to put points on the board. CUW ended up shutting out CUC with a score of 21-0 to end the first quarter.Ā

SECOND QUARTER
Continuing the CUC drive in the second quarter, the Cougars found their rhythm, piecing together a solid drive. Brown's runs and Henson's 11-yard rush, pushed them into CUW territory. Despite a fumble by Bosch, CUC was able to recover and find Manuel Mendoza (Ceres, Calif.) to complete a 15 yard pass up the middle, advancing the CUC drive. A 6-yard short pass by Lawson put CUC on the scoreboard, 7-21. CUW was able to respond quickly, creating a couple big plays that led them to complete a 11-yard pass for another touchdown, 28-7. CUC returned the ball for 8 yards, putting them at their own 21. A couple of rush yards from Brown set them up for the next explosive drive. Bosch passed deep up the middle for a total of 70 yards for Lawson, scoring another Cougar touchdown. CUW still leads the scoreboard, 28-14. CUW on the next drive, tried passing short only for Stroer to catch an interception, giving CUC another possession before the half. CUC was not able to capitalize on CUW interception, only to have CUW intercept the ball back. Both teams went on to exchange drives in the last 5 minutes of the quarter, but CUW would lead 28-14 heading into the half.
