Women's Soccer Drops Match in Elmhurst

ELMHURST, ILL. — Riding a three-game winning streak, Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team (3-2) traveled west to face off with the Elmhurst University Bluejays (2-1-2). The Cougars quickly saw their momentum stopped by the Bluejays, who downed Concordia 4-0.

-Inside the Box Score

  • Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) made eight saves in goal on the 11 shots she faced.

  • Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.) had two shots on goal and was the only Cougar to put multiple shots on goal.

  • Jennifer Reyna (Rochester, Minn.) and Mia Hirayama (Mililani, Hawaii) were the only other Cougars to register shots on goal.

-How It Happened

First Half

Elmhurst did not waste much time getting on the board. After two early shots were saved by Sheriff, a Bluejay found the back of the net at the 13:48 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Elmhurst put another shot on goal, but Sheriff was there to keep the game at 1-0.

The Bluejays grabbed another shot on goal at the 31:18 mark, but Sheriff was there again to make the save. Reyna put a shot on goal shortly after, but Elmhurst's keeper did not budge, preserving her team's 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Second Half

Just over four minutes into the second half, Elmhurst added some insurance to their lead when another goal made it 2-0. A flurry of shots on goal followed, but four saves from Sheriff and one from Elmhurst's goalie kept the score 2-0.

The home squad grabbed their third goal of the day at the 88:50 mark to make it 3-0, and, after CUC swapped out Sheriff for freshman Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.), Elmhurst added one more goal to make it 4-0 with less than a minute to go. That score stood once the final buzzer rang, securing the victory for Elmhurst.
