Concordia Defends Home Turf Against Warriors

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – It was an overcast day out at Concordia Stadium this afternoon, but the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer program (CUC) shone brightly, defending their home turf against the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran. CUC is now 6-0 at home, after defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 2-1. The Cougars are 7-3-1 (3-0-1 NACC).

Inside the Box
  • Natalie Flores (Placentia, Calif.) took the ball up from center field and score the Cougars' first goal in the third minute.
  • Pamela Saldivar (Chicago, Ill.) scored a penalty in the 49th minute.
  • Brooke Sheriff (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Katelyn Wagner (Lagrange, Ky.) split time in goal and combined for seven saves.
How it Happened
CUC quickly went up 1-0 in the third minute. Melica Kenworthy (New Lenox, Ill.) passed the ball up to Flores who took the ball from center field all the way down to the box and slid it nicely into the back post.

The Warriors would try to counter throughout the rest of the half, but Sheriff made three important saves to keep them scoreless. The teams battled, but the one goal was the lone goal of the half.
In the second half, Itzel Calderon (Oak Lawn, Ill.) immediately put Wisconsin Lutheran on the defensive, forcing a save from the Warriors' goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Just two minutes later, a foul in the box gave the Cougars a prime opportunity to double the lead. Saldivar stepped up for the penalty kick and nailed it low and to the corner, to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the 52nd minute, the Warriors would get one back, but the Cougars stopped any chance of a rally. Wagner made four important saves in the half to preserve the win, 2-1.

The Cougars next game will be Wednesday October 2 at 2:00 pm. Concordia will host Illinois Institute of Technology. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
