Cougars Shutout in NACC Opener

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's soccer (1-4, 0-1) opened up Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday afternoon as they welcomed the Rockford University Regents (1-5, 1-0) to River Forest. While chances were plentiful for the Cougars, Rockford's defense and goalie were tough to beat, resulting in a 3-0 shutout at the hands of the Regents.

-Inside the Box Score

  • Justin Ocampo (Melrose Park, Ill.) registered two shots on goal, the most of any Cougar.

  • Ocampo had four total shots, which was tied for the most on the team with Bernardo Delgado (Morelia, Michoacán).

  • Despite the result, CUC put more shots on goal (7), put up more total shots (20), and had more corner socks.

-How it Happened

First Half

CUC immediately put pressure on Rockford with a shot from Garrett Poynter (Noblesville, Ind.) reaching the Regents's goal 4:36 into the game, but the ball was saved to keep the game scoreless. Concordia got another shot on goal less than five minutes later, but another Rockford save kept the score 0-0.

The Cougars put up more pressure at the 22:21 mark with a pair of shots on goals, both of which were saved. A third shot on goal quickly followed, but once again, Rockford's keeper stood tall to keep CUC off the scoreboard.

After a switch in goal for CUC, Chase Zizak (Muskegon, Mich.) registered his first save on a Rockford shot at the 38:16 mark. Following another Zizak save, Rockford's offense finally broke through with less than five minutes remaining in the half, scoring the first goal of the day and taking a 1-0 lead. This is where the score remained once the first half clock struck zero.

Second Half

Rockford got the first shot on goal in the second half, but Zizak made the save to keep the deficit at two goals. For the Cougars however, it took them until the 74:19 mark to register a shot on goal, but Rockford's goalie maintained his shutout.

The Regents added an insurance marker with less than eight minutes to go in the game, and would pot one more goal just over a minute later to make it 3-0. This score was solidified once the final buzzer rang, securing the shutout win for Concordia.
