BELOIT, WIS. – On a windy day in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area, the Cougars traveled to Beloit to take on the Rockford Regents, splitting the day.
GAME ONE: 6-5 L
INSIDE THE BOX
- Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 3-4 at the plate with one double.
- Yashion Boswell (Lynwood, Ill.) continues to be a threat at the plate going 2-3 with one double.
- Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz.) led the team in RBIs with three with one hit on the day.
- Three Cougars dished on the mound with Dylan Scott (Bartlett, Ill.) pitching four innings while picking up one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars kicked things off right away with a leadoff single from Elijah Hickman (Rennselaer, Ind.) and a follow up single form Dorsch to put runners on first and second. A single to center field from Cajigas would move the runners and score one for an early 1-0 lead.
- With a walk for Brandon Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) loading up the bases a single from Kasik would score two and put the Cougars up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
- The Regents wasted no time getting going themselves and three runs in the bottom of the first evened the score up. With the second inning seeing a total of eight batters with one hit for each team, the top of the third would jump start things once again for the Cougars.
- A leadoff single from Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) paired with a hit from Boswell would put runners on first and second, but the Cougars would be unable to convert.
- A leadoff homerun for the Regents would give them the 4-3 advantage before Scott would force outs in the field to get out of the inning.
- Two stagnant innings would send the Cougars into the top of the sixth still trailing by one before a leadoff double from Boswell would put one in scoring position for a single to left center from Alejandro Muñoz (Evergreen Park, Ill.) to send the run home and even the game.
- The Regents would regain their lead in the bottom of the sixth with two hits for one run before a strikeout from Anthony Pullano (Park Ridge, Ill.) would close the inning.
- Needing to put at least one run on the board to keep the game alive, a leadoff hit by pitch for Mahler paired with a single through the right side would advance the pinch runner, Sergio Vazquez Jr. (Concord, Calif.), 90 feet away from tying the game. On the hit toward third base, Vazquez would score and even things up.
- The Regents would walkoff game one with a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh and take the 6-5 game one win.
HIGHLIGHTS
GAME TWO: 13-3 W (8 INNINGS)
INSIDE THE BOX
- Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.) would have a monster game at the plate going 4-5 with two homeruns and six RBIs.
- Krater followed closely behind in hits going 3-4 at the plate while Mahler would follow in RBIs with two with one homerun.
- Brady McCleery (Patterson, Calif.) picked up his first win of the season pitching five innings while picking up five strikeouts in 16 batters faced and giving up no runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars once again struck first with a single from Cajigas putting one on base for Mahler to send a long ball over the centerfield wall to go up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first. The Regents tacked two runs on in the second bottom of the first and painted a familiar story similar to the first game of the day.
- A leadoff walk for Kasik in the top of the second paired with back-to-back singles from Muñoz and Boswell would tack on two more runs and put the Cougars back out ahead.
- In the top of the third, a single from Kasik and a double from Jake Mahler (Vernon Hills, Ill.) would score one run and put the Cougars up 5-2 heading into the bottom of the third. With the Regents scoring one run in the bottom of the third, it would be the last run they would score of the day.
- With Hickman finding his way on base off a walk in the top of the fourth, he would march his way around the bags on a series of wild pitches to put him 90 feet from the plate. With taking the four ball walk, two runners would camp on base before Cajigas would send his first homerun of the game over the centerfield wall to put the Cougars up 8-3.
- With McCleery on the mound for the Cougars, the bottom of the fourth would be retired in three batters and be the first of a handful of quiet innings. The top of the seventh would be the next movement for the Cougars where a leadoff single from Krater paired with a double from Kasik and a sacrifice fly from Muñoz would score two and put the Cougars up 10-3.
- After holding the Regents at three for four consecutive innings already, they would do so again for a fifth and hand things back over to the Cougar offense.
- Cajigas would hit his second homerun of the game with two runners on base and put the Cougars up 13-3 in which the game would end after eight innings.
