Cougar Arms Shine in Self-Inflicted Loss

AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Concordia University Chicago baseball team fell in a frustrating fashion to the Calvin Knights, 6-5. The Cougars smashed 14 hits on the day while collecting 12 total strikeouts. Despite statically beating the Knights, they were unable to pull ahead despite a ninth inning rally.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Tyler Dorsch (Phoenix, Ariz.) once again led the Cougars with the team's only homerun while also bringing in two RBIs off two hits.
  • Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, Ill.) proved to be another reliable hitter picking up three hits in five at bats.
  • Michael Kasik (Chandler, Ariz) heated up with his lone hit on the day to bring in two RBIs.
  • Alejandro Muñoz (Evergreen Park, Ill.) recorded two hits in two at bats on the day including a double.
  • Dylan Scott (Bartlett, Ill.) would record a career high eight strikeouts on the day, leading the pitching squad along the way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights would strike first after a strong first inning would push them ahead 2-0 off three hits. Two quick half innings of play would keep the score at a swift 2-0 in favor of the Knights. In the bottom of the second, a bases loaded situation seemed strong for the Cougars, but ultimately would be unsuccessful in achieving anything.
  • The top of the second would consist of three strikeouts at the hands of Scott who threw 11 total pitches to achieve the three strikeouts.
  • The top of the third would be a bit of work for Cougar first baseman, Kasik, who would record two consecutive unassisted outs at first.
  • The Knights would jump ahead by as much as a 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth before a blank inning thrown from Richard Gomez (Chicago, Ill.) would shift momentum to the Cougars.
  • Following Gomez's back-to-back strikeouts, the Cougars would kick off their half of the inning with a single to left from James Kloppke Jr. (Norridge, Ill.). A single down the right field line from Tyler Krater (Phoenix, Ariz.) would put a runner on third and a double from Kasik would score two and put the Cougars on the board.
  • In the top of the eighth, the Knights would keep fighting and an error paired with a sacrifice flyout would would score the final run of the game for the Knights.
  • With less than two innings to go, the Cougars needed to find some momentum and would waste the bottom of the eighth to three infield groundouts. Muñoz would be the only Cougar to record a hit on the inning, picking up a double to left field, but would be left on base as the inning retired.
  • With Bryce Jones (Ottowa, Ill.) on the mound in the top of the ninth, two strikeouts and a groundout would get the Cougars out of the inning with no further damage from the Knights and put the pressure on the Cougar bats to find a spark.
  • The spark would come right at the start of the bottom of the ninth with a single through the left side from Cajigas to put a runner on base with Dorsch at the plate. Dorsch would send a longball over the left field wall to pick up his third straight game with a homerun and cut the deficit down to two runs.
  • With the fire ignited under the Cougar offense, a single to right field from Krater would keep the movement as he advanced to third with the following two outs. An error from the Knights would allow Krater to score and make it a one run game with two outs. Unable to even things up, the Cougars would close the bottom of the ninth with three runs on three hits with a final score of 6-5.
